where to stay in Madrid.

I was wondering if anyone can help me. I will be going to Madrid for the first time in January for a wedding. The wedding is being held at the Eurobuilding Hotel. I've checked the rates on this hotel and they are very expensive. I was wondering if anyone can recommend somewhere to stay that is inexpensive but in that area. Any suggestions would be great. thanks.

You need Maribel's help in a hurry; she knows that area well. I'll try to get you some ideas, but I never had to stay in Madrid's business area(s). The Eurobuilding is in the business section of Madrid, located off Paseo de Castellana, probably one of the most exclusive business sections in Madrid. For that reason you'll find that, in a very similar fashion as in NYC and Washington, D.C., hotels charge a high rate from Monday-Thursday with great rates during the weekend. Check if that is true with the Eurobuilding and you may be able to get a great rate Fri-Sunday. If the rate still not feasible, try Hotel Chamartin nearby. This hotel is located right on a train station, which should make it very convenient for transportation (get off metro Cuzco in Plaza del Cuzco for Eurobuilding). I did look up the 2002 rates for Chamartin and they are about 100 Euros Mon-Thurs and 76 Euros on the weekend.

Try madridman.com. Ask at their forum and you may find great suggestions. His site is well visited by Spaniards practicing their English and trying to help out visitors, so give it a try. Have fun planning and a great time at the wedding!! Salud!!

Hi Rebecca.
Yes the NH Eurobuilding rates (except for weekends) can be very expensive, because it's a top business class hotel with a hefty amount of convention business to boot. However, the NH chain weekend rates are kept quite competitive. Check them at
www.nh-hoteles.es or just call the NH Eurobuilding directly (what I would do).
Phone: 91 345 45 00
The NH Central Reservation phone is:
91 431 66 25

I do know this area very well because my husband's (huge) family lives in that same district. I'm just not fond of the Hotel Chamartin (don't like to stay in hotels above or attached to train stations, and it's even further north, not a pleasant or short walk to the Eurobuilding), but here's an idea that's very first class and still less than the Eurobuilding:

I can highly recommend the AC Aitana, just 3 blocks from the Eurobuilding. It's been recently re-done by the very hip, snazzy AC chain-they keep their properties extremely up to date, give great value and lots of extras, and it's right on a pretty part of the upper Castellana.
Their standard double normally goes for 165, but because it's Jan., you just might snag a discount, so be sure to call the hotel directly. Phone: 91 458 49 70
www.achotelaitana.com

If that doesn't work , you can always find a low rate (I think) at the Gran Atlanta on Comandante Zorita behind the other side of the Castellana, about 8 blocks away from the Eurobuilding, but still closer than the Chamartin. I can vouch for it, as it's right across the street from the apt. we occasionally rent. It's near the enormous El Corte Ingles shopping complex, and the street itself is restaurant row-great dining at the Basque spots there and the wonderful Asturian "Ferreiro" (quite moderate) next door and great take out/breakfasts/snacks at the fabulous gourmet shop Mallorca up on the corner. The Gran Atlanta takes tour groups, so they keep their rates in the low-moderate range (under 100 euros).
Check them at Expedia or Utell or hotelbook.com or www.atrapalo.com
Call the hotel directly at:
91 533 59 00

Hope this helps.
Maribel
Rebecca,
I just thought of another attractive place, about 6 blocks north of the Eurobuilding in the Torres Gemelas Kio (the twin towers seen in the Almodovar movie, "Carne Tremula&quot) at the Plaza Castilla:
the Abba Castilla Plaza.
The Abba hotels I've stayed in have been more than satisfactory, and the standard doubles here *start* at 94, but of course, it depends on your dates. See what you think at
www.abbacastillaplazahotel.com
I've seen discount rates for this Abba on sites such as Utell, Expedia, Hotelbook, etc.
Worth considering.

I just read this entire thread even though I have no plans to go to Madrid. Maribel, you are a wonder and a tremendous asset to this forum! Is there anything about Spain you can't help with?

Hi Patrick,
Yep, there's plenty I don't know! Please never ask me about seafood (paella) restaurants in Alicante! (inside joke- still embarrased over that one).

The enormous Laserna family in Spain (20 brothers/sisters-in-law, 40 nieces/nephews/great nieces/nephews last time I counted) keeps me on my toes and fills in my many gaps. When I don't know, I can just call them. Or take good note of the equally valuable posts of all the Spain lovers and the Spaniards here. I've learned tons from them.
Spain has been a life-long study that I can't possibly ever finish or "master", but I do love trying to get better at it.
Now, if I could just branch out and see the rest of Europe as magnificently as you do...

Rebecca,
Just one thought, then I'l get out of the Madrid hotel booking for Jan, wedding business.

On www.granatlanta.com, I couldn't find availability for 2 wkds. I tried in Jan. but I'd still call directly, if that's the one that best fits your budget.

Forget the other hotel right at the Plaza Castilla, the one that's actually INSIDE one of the Torres Kio.
It's the "Silken Puerta Castilla", another solid chain hotel option.
At www.silken-puertacastilla.com
it says doubles go for 154 euros, but Silken should offer wkd. rates

(of course, we don't even know if you'll be there on the wkd, but since it's a wedding, we're assuming so!)

That's it. Hope one of these options works for you.
