Where to stay in Lisbon
 

What area is recommended to stay for a 3 day visit in Lisbon. I would like a place located centrally as well as close to to the train station as we will be planning on taking trips to Sintra and Cascais.

When I try booking using Venere - they show hotels in various areas. So I wanted to know which area I should concentrate on for what I am looking for.

I really like the Hotel Mundial, which is located in Graca/Baixa. It is centrally located to most of the major sites in Lisbon.

Our Fodor's friend, Shuler, also has stayed here.

You want to stay in Baixa, Alfama, Bairro Alto.

You used to take the train to Cascais from Cas do Sodre Station. I don't know if that has changed, however.

The train to Sintra was taken from Rossio Station--which was closed for years. But, I have heard that it has reopened.

Well I went back to Venere and it seems like there are more hotels to choose from in the Saldanha - São Sebastião region. Is this are ok?

Is it too far from all the sites?

Saldanha isn't too bad because it is close to Gulbenkian Collection (a fabulous museum). You can take the Metro to get down to Baixa.

The best place to stay is Baixa because it is centrally located. You can easily walk over to Chiado and Bairro Alto.

What sites do you want to see?

the first time we visited Lisbon we were in the Baixa. We enjoyed the area because the metro is at your fingertips, and there are so many cafes for people watching.

This time we are staying in Chiado.

You can find reasonable accomodations in both of these areas.

Don't know about Saó Sebastiaó but I stay at Residencial Estrela do Saldanha on Avda Republica, 17. Metro Saldanha entrance is at the door (Duque de Avila entry/exit) and you can catch the #28 bus at Plaza Saldanha (about 150m).

You can get anywhere from there on Metro Lisboa - maybe 20min to Baixa or Rossio or Cais do Sodré

I know Lisbon pretty well, and I think the Saldanha-Sao Sebastiao area is a good one. It is not the touristy area, but Saldanha is a very nice neighborhood with lots of apartment buildings, retail and business, etc. Probably early 20th century. I have recommended the Hotel Real Palacio to friends who have liked it. The chain have a couple of other hotels in the neighborhood, too. (www.hoteisreal.com) It’s close to the Corte Ingles (big department store, with a terrific, huge, "upscale" grocery store) It’s well connected via metro to downtown and all the tourist sites, but is not too touristy itself. Metro stop is Sao Sebastiao, which is right in the Corte Ingles.

Nice restaurant nearby, too – a Policia – food is very good, but the best thing of all is that it has a non-smoking ROOM in the restaurant.

Barbbelle -- This is the best news I've heard in a long time! I'm going to Portugal next week, and I'm really looking forward to smoke-free restaurants and bars. I just hope it's not like Spain's so-called smoking ban!
