where to stay in Crete for 7 days

I have reward points that I can use for Best Western Hotels and there is one in Kato Gouves Heraklion. The hotel name is Best Western Your Memories Hotel.
Is this a good location to use for seeing Crete and any information about the hotel would be appreciated.

Heraklion is not an especially pretty or interesting town but it can be helpful to overnight there before a flight out the next day. If you can find a Best Western west of Heraklion, say near Chania or Rethymnon, i think you would have a more "pure Crete" experience and therefore a better time. I was not at all impressed with the area between Heraklion and Agios Nicolaus(sp?), nor Ag Nic itself.

But if there are no others, you can certainly do interesting day trips from Heraklion.

Chania would be my first choice, no contest.

The Porto Veneziano in Chania is a Best Western these days. Much better option. People here have stayed there, I know

Sheila,
Thanks I will try Porto Veneziano to see if they are affiliated with Best Western. They are not on the Best Western website. Thanks to all for the response to my question I will see if I can get to stay in Chania.

Just received email from Porto Veneziano they are no longer affiliated with Best Western.

damn! Sorry

Harry, is everything governed by getting a free hotel room? I know really cute pensions in Chania you can get for 40-50€ per double in May-June.... just ask. Why not save your BW points for a country that is full of BW's ... like, oh, USA.

I have to agree with Chania rather than Heraklion even if you have to pay for a hotel, they can be very inexpensive and you will be staying in the old a city that is hundreds of years old.
Here are some pictures to tempt you.
