We are two girls travelling to Crete and would like to know where to stay. Can anyone recommend a particular part of the island?

Well apart from the palace of knosses, we are not to sure what to do! we would like to stay somewhere out of the way of the touristy areas

OK; well, that's a small piece of guidance. Given that you want away from touristy (Knossos (sp) being near the built up and touristy bits) I'd suggest that you aim for the south coast- maybe Matala, so there's a bit of life about the place.

Most of Crete's glories are in its Minoan ruins and scenery and there's a palace and a temple a few miles away.

See Knossos on your way in or out of the island so you don't travel unnecessarily over the island.
