What area of Athens should we stay? Any suggestions on hotels?

Christina -

All my guidebooks say to stay in the Plaka area of Athens. I'm staying just outside that area, near the Central Market, but still walking distance to the Acropolis.
Martha

Christina,
We stayed in the Acropolis View Hotel in Athens and it was great. It's on the side of the Acropolis that the Parthenon faces and is walking distance to the Plaka and to the downtown area. It has a great view from the rooftop garden and you can watch the fireworks at the Parthenon at night. I found it through Fodors and it was recommended by them. I booked it over the Internet and we were very pleased with it. It cost us about $56 a night for a double and included breakfast. Staff was good and it's a small place and has an elevator and a/c.
Have a good time.
Carol

I have stayed once in a residential area (starts with a K...) and once near Constitution Square. The residential area was a million times better: Athens is a big, dirty, noisy overwhelming place (and a good city, too)and it's ever so nice to get away from that and have an oasis of tranquility at the end of the day when returning to your hotel. We found our hotel in Let's Go, I'm sorry I don't remember the name. But it was easy to walk into the center from K----- (Kolonaki?)

We went to Greece in March ‘98 and went first to the Acropolis View. Not only was the price higher than we expected but we could not get a room w/view. So, we took a taxi over to the Hotel Attalos, Athinas 29, ph 1-3212-801, fax 1-3243-124, http://www.greecetravel.com:8001/attalos/. There, we got a great room--505. Not only did we have a balcony but we had views of both the Acropolis and Lycabettus Hill. When we returned to Athens at the end of our trip, we stayed in 605, which had even better views. The best room is 606, it's a corner room. They also have a rooftop bar. We enjoyed our stays here, we found the rooms clean and large and the staff were very helpful. All this for about $31/night. The Attalos is two blocks from Monastiraki metro and the Plaka. We could walk to everything! Check out their website!

Greece is great, you'll have a wonderful time.
We've booked the Attalos for 2 nights in September, based on earlier notes that I saw on it. I'm glad to hear that it's a good choice. Rate is a little higher - it's $54/night (without breakfast), but that still seems reasonable. (I've also requested room 606, so I hope I get it!)
