Where to stay around Verdun for WWI touring?

My father was in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive at Verdun. I would like to find a good base to travel around that area between their and Sarrlouis, Germany. Any suggestions? We will be traveling by car from Paris.

A place between Verdun and Saarlouis? Metz.

Thank you. I am having a hard time finding places to stay. I will look in Metz. Any other suggestions...?

If you want a smaller town, Thionville might fit the bill.

Try the Prunella in Verdun. Very reasonable and good access to the battlefields. It was recommended to me on one of the Verdun websites and it was worth it. Just decline the breakfast, Much closer to the Meuse-Argonne than Metz.

Take a look at AnselmAdorne's trip report from a few years ago. It's one of the Fodor's classic reports.

After reading Anselm's exceptional report, may I suggest you read "To Conquer Hell" by Edward Lengel? It is a very thorough, although lacking in graphics, history of the Meuse Argonne offensive of 1918. I had Google Earth up as I read it to get a sense of where the units were and what the terrain was. It is also somewhat disheartening as to the shear waste of young American lives. Also, plan a visit to the American Cemetery at Romange. I would be curious to know what DIvision did your father serve in?

But TT, the request was for a place between Verdun and Saarlouis.

Well, it is kinda between, as it is on the SE side of Verdun. Just offering my .02€ worth.
