Where To Spend Four Days In Europe
I will be in Berlin during May, 2014. Besides spending time in Germany, I have 3-4 days available to see someplace else. If at all possible, I'd like to fly to one place, and use that as my base. I am considering Stockholm, and some place in Switzerland. Can you recommend any other places to consider, which are easy to get to, and which would be a good base to use, to see that area?
I am a pretty typical tourist. I like quaint towns and villages. I like cities, as long as they have some charm and personality. For example, I've enjoyed Dublin, and Munich. I'm okay with a museum or two, if they are special. I enjoy seeing beautiful vistas and countryside, and mountains are special to me. I'm not a hiker or camper, so don't need that kind of experience. I enjoy my creature comforts too much. Hopefully, this will give you some idea of what I would like. Your help will be greatly appreciated. |
"Someplace else" as other than Germany or other than Berlin? Dresden and the Saxon Alps might fit your bill for 3 to 4 days.

Sorry not to be clearer. Yes, I'd like to go someplace else other than Germany!

I think pretty much any city in Europe would fit the bill. I would start googling or looking through guidebooks to see what grabs your liking.
Also I would check where I could fly direct from Berlin. Or take the train within a few hours... Some ideas London Paris Barcelona Lisbon Rome You could do a day trip to the country from any of those cities. |
1. Paris
2. Paris |
What do we have:
quaint towns but not Germany countryside and vistas Stockholm and mountains Well, Stockholm has no mountains, and the old town is small. Copenhagen is a quaint town with much more sights, but no mountains. If the mountains are important, Luzern will be the best combination of all your criteria: quaint town, breathtaking scenery, mountains. Fly to Zürich and take the train (1 hour) to Luzern. Take the tram up Mount Pilatus and ride a boat on the lake. Make a daytrip to Bern (another quaint town) and to the Jungfraujoch (if the weather is fine - access from Interlaken). |
Copenhagen, catch the ferry

I suggest you go to whatever place you have most wanted to visit for the longest time. If you don't want to do that, go to Paris or Florence (and the towns surrounding Florence).

Lucerne and Copenhagen both sound good to me.
But in your shoes I might get down to Munich and take a train to Venice or Florence then fly out from there. Gorgeous scenery from a comfy train seat. |
