Where to spend a month in Portugal

We're a family of four, taking a year out to find a place that fits for us. We are both freelance journalists so we're fortunate enough to be able to work from wherever we are, so long as there's a WIFI connection. Our first stop is going to be in Portugal. We've been to Sintra, but wouldn't be opposed to spending more time there, at the same time we're open to other options too.

We are NOT looking to pack as much as we can into our stays. We are more interested in making connections with people, learning a bit about the local way of life. I know a month isn't really long enough for that, but it's a start.

We're also adventurers in our own town and at least once a week go somewhere brand new for the day (myself and the two kids - 2 and 4) and we'll be continuing that habit so somewhere that has daytrips and interesting history (most of Europe then, really ;) ) is a must too.

Too much to ask? I'm not sure, but would love some advice!

I should have said we're looking at January to mid February for Portugal

You might consider Coimbra, not only it is an interesting City it has a fine university.

Are you planning a month in one place? If so, I'd say Lisbon. If not, I'd add Coimbra and Porto.

We will probably be 'living' in one place for a month and doing short/camping trips from that as a base, yes. Hoping to capitalise on long term rental prices.
