I love The Louisiana Museum in Denmark.
|
The Kiasma in Helsinki. Oh my!
www.kiasma.fi The Munch in Oslo. Better get to Norway fast at the rate they're being stolen. Three more from a hotel just this morning. http://apnews.excite.com/article/200...D88M9ICO0.html :-( www.munch.museum.no |
Well, there's loads out there. Two I haven't visited yet but would like to are the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart.
|
in provence there are the picasso museum in antibes and the fondation maeght, near st-paul-de-vence. a good part of the fondation maeght consists of sculptures in outdoor settings.

all of the above are recommended , Berlin is well know for being a Modern city , but don't forget the Pierre Giannadda Foundation in Switzerland , it's an important promoter !
my favourites are the Tate Modern and the Guggenheim , but nothing beats the East wing of the National Gallery in Washington DC, I was there a month ago , and the building as well as the space plus the oeuvres really struck me , and I 'm a european! |
By the way, the East Wing is an IM Pei work:
http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildi...l_Gallery.html I seem to recall that Pei is doing/has done a building in Berlin -- the German history museum or something like that? It's off Unter den Linden. |
This is the Pei building in Berlin for those interested:

Every city/town in the world has hundreds/thousands of museums dedicated to modern art, I don't quite get the point of your question.
|
That's okay if you don't get the point. Lots of other helpful posters did. Thanks for the answers. My daughter is very interested in modern art and so we want to make sure to set up an itinerary that includes a good sampling.
|
I should add, because someone is sure to think otherwise, that we're not planning on hitting all of these places at once. But it's good information to know for general trip planning.
|
Maybe you should tell us which cities may go on the itinerary, WillTravel? That way people may be able to be even more specific with recs.

This summer it looks like Madrid, Amsterdam, and London. Madrid, because that is where we got the shocking airfare deal and of course we always wanted to visit it anyways. London, for theatre and art.
The one uncertain thing is the other city. I was advocating for Berlin instead of Amsterdam, but she doesn't agree, and I'll be happy to see Amsterdam. However, I will show her this thread and then we can make a final decision. We probably won't choose some other city altogether, but we'll be aware of it for next time. |
You were in Berlin recently, I know, but I think that Berlin would be more interesting than Amsterdam for modern art.
And London will have a lot of interesting contemporary art too -- I've yet to explore the art galleries in London, but I think that it could be even more interesting to see what artists today are doing. Has your daughter been to Amsterdam or Berlin? I guess the Stedelijk Museum has been temporarily moved. I didn't get to see it on this trip, but there's some interesting stuff going on in the old post office building (a search on the web will give you more details) -- the top (?) floor is a restaurant called 11, where I wanted to eat but arrived too late. Anyway, personally I'd choose to go to Berlin myself, but I can understand why someone would prioritize and think Amsterdam first, since I also went to Amsterdam before I went to Berlin. |
If your daughter is interested in modern architecture, I guess a case could be made for why Berlin would be preferable to Amsterdam.

Thanks for the laugh of the day. First of all I know of NO CITIES that have hundreds or thousands of museums dedicated to modern art, but then I guess I'm not so well traveled as you. I suppose it wouldn't make any sense to you either if someone asked the best city to see architecture, since they all have it? Or the best city for food, since there are restaurants everywhere. Think about it, m_kingdom and I'm sure if you try hard enough you'll be able to understand why someone would ask this. Well, maybe not. |
111op, she hasn't been to Europe at all yet. I took her brother before, and she wasn't interested in going then, but she is now. Her brother is now occupied with his university life so it works out fine. I have a feeling that she likes the idea of Amsterdam because it has the reputation for being so edgy and outré, but the art is definitely interesting to her too.
|
I guess you yourself prefer Berlin, WillTravel?
I think that you should probably show her Amsterdam first, but ultimately I think that I'd probably plan the trip based on which city combination allows for the most efficient/cheapest/convenient transportation. But London would also be my top pick for the four cities. |
I haven't been to Amsterdam yet, but I can tell right away it's more expensive than Berlin - and I did feel my last visit to Berlin was too short. But we discussed the budget issue and she's willing to make the slight sacrifices to meet it while staying in Amsterdam, even though we could stay in better style in Berlin.

I've heard that BERLIN is an amazing city for progressive art and music.
I think that may be because Germany has such a high unemployment rate. No Jobs = Need to Produce Art |
I like Amsterdam better , but it can't match Berlin for contemporary and Modern Art!
Thank God we all still have thousands of museums to visit in every city throughout the world! Anyone can hand me the exhaustive list , please?! |
