Where to pick up rental car in Milan without going into the city center

We are training from Varenna to Milan where we will pick up our rental car. Any thoughts on where to pick up up a car without driving in Milan proper?

Not quite sure I understand the question. Are you not picking up the car at Milan railway station? Does the train from Varenna come into Milan Central or another station? If it comes into central then pick the car up there. I guess it depends where you are going on to next whether you need to drive into Milan proper. We did it the other way and picked up from Milan central and drove to Varenna. If you have a half decent map it is not to difficult to get around.

I guess I'm asking if the train station is in Milan center. I don't want to drive in a big city if avoidable.

The Centrale (Central) train station is in Milan. We always picked up the rental car in Milan. You could pick up a rental car at the airport at Malpensa and although I am not sure I would imagine the Linate airport (just east of Milan) has rental cars.

linate is a lot closer to milan than malpensa.

i wouldn't worry about it too much. signage is usually good getting from a train station to the autostrada.
