Where to park a car to tour Amalfi by boat/train

We will be driving down to the Amalfi coast from the South of France. We'd like to be able to park our car somewhere around Salerno, then tour Amalfi by train or boat, to avoid driving on the windy mountain roads. Is there anywhere near Salerno where we could park our car for 4-5 days? Then, once we've been round from Salerno to Sorrento do we have to take the same route back or can we do it in a circle somehow?
Thanks for any advice!

Hi L,

Have you googled <Salerno Parking>?

You can take the ferry from the docks near the train station (P.zza della Concordia) to Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento.

From Sorrento, you can take the SITA bus along the coast road to Amalfi. From there you change to the bus to the Salerno train station.

Enjoy your visit.

You can't tour the Amalfi couast by train - there is none. Between Salerno and Sorrento your choices are bus (local, often mobbed and very slow, esp in summer) or ferries along the coast.

Are you planning n dropping you car in Salerno - or going bck for it? If the latter you will need transport both ways and should be aware that ferries often do;t run very far into the evening.

If it were me I would just drive - and take a cruise out from one of the towns to see the coast from the water.

Thanks for your replies. I did google parking in Salerno but came up with lots of hotels with car parks, whereas I'm looking for a public car park.
I will be coming back for the car, and thought about doing something like this:
Leave car in Salerno.
Ferry/bus to Amalfi - stay there a couple of nights.
Get boat to Capri - stay one night
Get boat to Sorrento - stay couple of nights
Get boat from Sorrento to Positano & visit/lunch
Boat from Positano back to Salerno

Or something like that....

Hi Lou - When are you going? My suggestion would be to leave your car in the car-park at Nocelle (- above Positano).

You can take the bus from there to Positano - from where there are ferry/hydrofoil/bus connections along the Amalfi Coast and to Capri.

Here's a parking lot in Salerno with an e-mail address and near the water.
http://tinyurl.com/yf79zgp There are others. I googled "parking lots salerno italy"

You could park in Amalfi, but I think you have to get there really early in the day to get a spot. Does you hotel in Amalfi offer parking? You can ask if you can leave the car there for the rest of the trip if you pay.

Your trip sounds very doable.

Hi, Steve, we are going at the end of May, but really don't want to drive along the mountain roads, they look too scary and the driver won't be able to appreciate the scenery.
Thanks for the Salerno car park Ann, you're obviously better at googling than I am! I will send them an email to find out if I can leave the car there for several days.
Thanks for your help.

Lou - As an alternative to Salerno you could also leave it in one of the Sorrento car-parks (- at a charge). For example there's an underground one down near the port.

Would Sorrento be easier? We're already doing Naples - Pompei - Salerno, I thought it might be a bit lengthy to do Naples - Pomepei - Sorrento, but I may be wrong?
If it would be easier, cheaper or more secure to leave the car in Sorrento then I would definitely consider it.

Lou - I can't see it makes much difference - Sorrento is only 30 mins drive from Pompeii.

If you are planning to spend a couple nights there it's an easy starting point - or you can go connect there to Capri.
Alternatively you can reach Amalfi from Sorrento by hydrofoil (- or bus).

Here's the garage link (- there are others)
http://www.garagesorrento.com/english/index.asp

The rate seems to be about €25 per day - depending on size of car.

Hope this helps ...

Thanks Steve, this looks like quite a good solution actually as they also organise visits etc.
I think I'll look at starting in Sorrento...
