Where to overnight in Switzerland? (driving from Belgium to Italy)

Hi there

My husband and I will be driving from our home in Brussels to Tuscany this May, and have decided to break our trip halfway and spend a night somewhere in Switzerland.

We'll be taking the A2/E35 motorway past Basel, Luzern, etc. and down into Italy.

I've never been to Switzerland before (scandalous really, as I used to live in Lyon!!) and we'd like to overnight somewhere pleasant, rather than just a chain hotel by the motorway somewhere.

I'm loath to go out and buy a guidebook just for one night in the country, so I thought I'd see if anyone here had any ideas or recommendations for a nice overnight stop.

For example, would Luzern be a good stop-off point for one night?

Or does anyone have a recommendation for a smaller town that we could overnight in, within reasonable driving distance from the motorway?

Apologies for being so vague and thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Hanl - Luzern would be a great stopover IMO - it's a lovely town.

I agree. Luzern offers some of the best of Switzerland. It is a beautiful little city.
Cheers,

HI hanl,

I agree that Luzern would be a great place to stop because of its magnificent lakes-and-mountains scenery.

I want to suggest also the town of Brig. Though it has no lake, it is surrounded by mountains. Most tourists just transit through, so you won't be competing with others. It's just a charming little place with a charming old town. Much smaller than Luzern.

Have fun!

I also thought of recommending Brig for it's little charming old town. Only did not because the town was not on the way from Brussels to Italy when I checked the itinerary on mappy.com but if you can pass by there without doing a lot of detour ...

For a smaller town with an amazing view, check out Brunnen. It's located on the Vierwaldstättersee. Get a hotel on the lake. A very nice hotel is Waldstätterhof. If you spend the night on a Saturday, then you can enjoy their most wonderful brunch on Sunday morning. You'll feel like a stuffed queen after the amazing brunch. Reservations for the brunch is required.
