Where to keep passport?
Is it better to keep passport in a safe place on your person-ie money belt or in a hotel room safe?
|
Keep it in your hotel safe.
|
I think its wise to keep it w/ you at all times. I bought a great wallet/purse at Brookstone ($30) leather, that attaches to your belt but also has a strap. It holds passports, credit card and MOney - nothing else.
It held mine and my husbands.
Sometimes you need it for shopping, ID to get into certain area.....
I would never leave mine behind.
|
Be sure to also have a copy on hand just in case.
|
If you have a choice, hotel room safe. But, I have been to B&B without safes so don't count on it. Besides, on the day you travel, you need to keep it with you anyway.

hi,

I agree 100% with anne. all 4 or 5 trips to europe i used a wallet/purse with strap, one that has zippered compartments and held my credit cards, passport etc. I always keep it with me whereever i go. even in high risk pic pocket areas, i just put the strap over my shoulder under my jacket and kept at least one hand on it at all times.

i did however make copies of everything and keep it in the safe at the hotel just in case.

sandy c
Keep everything in the safe. Put a copy of your passport in your purse. Don't walk around with your entire stash. If you are robbed your are SOL.

Hello Diane, I say put the real thing in the hotel safe or safe in your room. I carry a copy of my husbands passport and he carries a copy of mine. I suggest leaving a copy at home also. Just in case! I use a money belt. Everyone has their own way of course. But I only carry what cash I need for the day plus the passport copy and some ID including the copy of passport. Have a wonderful and safe trip.

I think the best place is in the hotel safe. The only time I ever needed my passport was to get one of those 10% discount cards that Printemps in Paris offers to us yankee's.
|
Many saying hotel safe. I have been to several small B&B with no hotel safe of any sorts. Did you ALWAYS find hotel safe?
|
Not all hotels have safes, and I don't trust them anyway. I keep my passport in a pouch under my clothes, then I know exactly where it is, and have it in case of emergency.

The money-belt bags work great for stuff like passports, credit cards and some cash. They tuck inside your slacks or skirt and are very comfortable and easy to get at. I think you can order them from a lot of the catalogs that specialize in travel paraphernalia.

I suppose from this post that leaving ones passport at the hotel is your best bet. I was just wondering, was there ever an instance that you made a pruchase and needed the passport as your ID? I know sometimes on purchases you need to show your ID so I was just wondering if it is different in Europe.
Thanks
You need to show your passport (the real thing, not a copy) when cashing Travelers Checks at banks or at Currency Exchange offices.

|
What's the point of having a passport if it's in the hotel safe? What do you do when asked for ID? What do you do when your hotel safe is broken in to?
If you can't be responsible enough to keep track of your passport in a money belt then you have no business traveling abroad.

The copy of your passport which keep with you at all times is perfectly fine when cashing travelers checks. My passport is always in the hotel safe.PJ

It is not true that the xerox copy is always accepted when cashing Travelers Checks. Exactly the opposite happens.

I always try to show the xerox copy first. But banks and currency-exchange places usually reject it, and insist on seeing the real thing. This has happened to me in several countries.

Museums and historical places usually accept xerox copies. The only exception to this I encountered thus far was the Vatican Museum, which refused to let me have an audiotape unless I let them hold onto my passport. (I refused to give it to them.)
