Where to go within 1 days train ride from Munich?
 

We will have 6 days after leaving Lenk to having to arrive in Munich. Suggestions as to where is a good place to visit during that time (January 08) - train travel the preference, Suggestions please??? Auss

I really enjoyed the village of Mittenwald; I spent a month there in a vacation apartment in the winter 06-07. Mittenwald is surrounded by mountains with cable cars or lifts to take you to the top if you don't want to hike; there are also hiking trails off to nearby villages. Mittenwald has a rich history as a violin-making center, and it has an interesting museum to showcase this history and art. It's also a perfect little picture of the past with most buildings decorated with colorful frescoes, and it has a pedestrian central street lined with interesting shops & cafes. It's about two hours south of Munich.

Or you could see Innsbruck, which would be about three hours from Munich I think. I guess it would depend on if you want to spend your time in a city or in a village --

If you go to Munich via Innsbruck (which is a detour but more scenic than the direcct route - and you have time..), Mittenwald is quite on the way.
With 6 days in between you could even allow a (slow but beautiful) routing via Engadine!

The Ulm Munster is quite impressive, and easily reached by train from Munich.

I am not clear whether you want to go places that are on the way between Lenk and Munich or to any cities/towns within a day's train ride.
If the latter, I would add to Landshut Regensburg and Nurnberg
Augsburg is another possibility more on your way

I would recommend going to Oberammergau if not for overnight, it is easily do-able on the train as a day trip. You change trains in a place called Murnau.
If you stay overnight from here you can go to see the castles of King Ludwig among other things also by train. You would have to check out accomodation though for this time of year.
Either way you can see this lovely town in all its winter glory.

I was thinking myself (as mentioned vttraveler) whether you meant to visit somewhere on the way to Munich or from Munich. I think another gorgeuos place on the way south to Munich is Rothenburg.
By the way the train to Oberammergau takes about 2 hours.

We spent 2 weeks in Germany a couple years ago - flew into and out of Munich.

We spent a few days in Nuremberg, with a day trip to Rothenberg. Both towns were really great. I liked Nuremberg better than Rothenberg, but Rothenberg was awfully picturesque and atmospheric.

We also went south to the Fuessen area for a few days. We liked this area a lot too - different from the Nuremberg area - alpine scenery, hiking, lakes, etc.
