Where to go, where to stay

Hi, Im new to this forum and I'm looking for some help with planning my next trip.

I will be travelling solo and want to visit a place in europe. I will be going for 7 days.

This will be my first time in Europe, I want to do some touristy stuff as it is my first time so I'll want to see the "main" attractions. Any reccomendations ?

I don't want to spend a fortune, just enough for me to enjoy the fun attractions and the outdoors.

I want to travel sometime in September. Looking at Italy, Spain,Cyprus, Scotland.

Welcome, rosalesj!

With only 7 days, I'd choose Italy because I love it, stay in one place and make a daytrip (or 2).

If you like cities, stay in Rome and daytrip to Tivoli, Florence or Pompeii

If you prefer smaller cities, base in Florence and take day trips to Siena, Pisa, etc.

Others can make suggestions for the others places. I've only been to Edinburgh and Barcelona in the other countries you mention so can't give best advice.

I suggest that you buy or borrow a "best of Europe" guidebook of some kind. Rick Steves has one. He also has a "Europe Through the Back Door" guide that gives a lot of information a first time traveler can use and which includes information about popular tourist destinations.

I suggest that you stick to one country, whichever one you choose. Don't forget to consider travel time--that is, how long it will take you to get to each destination.

Remember that southern countries may still be pretty warm in September. When I traveled to Italy and Spain, I did so in October, when the weather is cooler.

I agree about grabbing an overview guidebook for Europe to narrow down where YOU want to go your first trip. You can do what you describe in your post pretty much anywhere!

An easy way is just pick one city and spend your week there. Say Barcelona.

Or Rome/Florence/Venice is a classic Italy 1st trip than can be done in a week using the train between cities.

I think Cyprus or Scotland might be a bit trickier to plan.

My suggestion is also, Rick Steves book/s. "Europe Through the Back Door" is excellent. He probably has one on Italy, too.
We have gone several times, with his book in hand, and have had virtually no problems.
I agree with Pegontheroad, that one country is best for a 7 day trip.
Of course, Italy is my all time favorite,of many travels.

September can be very warm, and all of Rick's hotels may not have air conditioning.

I was going to suggesting spending a week in Paris, but you don't have that on your list. In which case, I would choose another city and spend your week there, Rome or Florence or Barcelona or Madrid, with a daytrip or two to a smaller town.

Speaking for myself, I really enjoy spending an entire week in a big city, ideally renting an inexpensive apartment in order to save on food.

I would agree on Paris, as that is my must 'go city' in Europe.

After 19 trips to most of Western Europe, including 9 that included Paris, that's where I would spend a week. If not Paris, Rome.
