OK. Last year we left Austria after Christmas in Vienna and headed to Lucerne for New Years. We arrived New Year's eve day and took a van tour of the city. We stayed at the National Hotel right there on the lake, and after a very nice meal at a local restaurant, we renturned to the balcony of our room. We watched a fantastic fireworks display set off from a barge in the lake across from our hotel. The fireworks on the lake with the Alps in the background was one of our top moments to remember.

The hotel has their own dinner and party if you like the group thing. It actually looked very nice. very clubby bar with piano. The staff could not have been more accommodating when I emailed them prior to our trip to request fireworks view. The even confirmed the time for the display and posted it on our door when we arrived. Very fun.

There is a lot to do and see in Lucerne. There is even a casino next to the National Hotel. The shops are closed New Years day, but you can take a boat across the lake that docks at a spot where you can take a cable car to a mountain top hotel for a great view of the Alps.

We departed Zurich on 1/2. Took the train from Lucerne straight to the airport terminal. Could not have been any easier.
