Where to go in Provence France?
 

My mom grandma and I are all planning to go to France this May. My grandma is especially looking forward to going to Provence. Are there any places, towns, sights we should be sure not to miss while there? Thanks

You really need to get a guidebook and do some research; it's a very large region. I'd recommend the Michelin Green Guide to Provence for starters, and you can check out the Provence web site as well.

How much time will you have Do you plan to rent a car? What are your interests?

We are planning on spending about a week in Provence and we will have a car. I'd like to hear from people what their favorite places are in Provence. Since its going to be my grandma, mom and me, 21, we all have different interests... But we all enjoy nature, we don't like places that are swamped with tourists and we really want to experience France and the French culture. There are LOTS of things to do & see in Provence - enough to keep us occupied for the 18 weeks we've spent vacationing there.

Cute villages, farmer's markets, Roman Ruins, wineries, vineyards, medieval villages, drives through lavender fields, drives through sunflower fields, drives through scenic canyons, drives through mountains, shoping, Aix, Avignon, Pont du Gard, Arles, castles, rivers, antiques, coast, beaches, ports. Really too much to describe here.

We've stayed twice in St. Remy and enjoyed it a lot. In that area I also recommend seeing Les Baux and Glanum (both historical sites).

We loved Arles. We went on market day so got to enjoy that as well as the historic sites.

Pont du Gard was interesting. We also went to Uzes, which some people love, but we did not.

We've visited Avignon and enjoyed the Popes palace and the various sites associated with that.

We visited Ste Maries de la Mer, but did not enjoy it very much (ocean is beautiful though). We did enjoy Aigues-Mortes.

We checked out the L'Isle sur la Sorgue Sunday market, but it was a bit overwhelming for us. Go early if you go. We also visited Carpentras on market day and were not impressed with the market, although I would go back to check out the city on a non-market day, it looked interesting.

We've also visited Pernes les Fontaines, Gordes, Roussillon and Fontaine de Vaucluse. Worth spending a few hours in each place but they aren't all day excursions.

A bit of a drive, but we had a lovely over night stay in Moustiers Ste Marie.

Thanks everyone for your recommendations! Its sounds like everyone really likes Arles and Thanks SemiMike for the pictures - all of the towns look so beautiful and I'll be sure to try and convince my mom and grandma to take a boat ride off of Cassis - that looks like it will be a lot of fun!
