Le Caveau de Huchette: I am intrigued by a jazz club with dancing. What types of dancing go on in a jazz club? Swing? Something else?
I haven't been to many jazz clubs (maybe one on a date centuries ago) as I am more of an old rocker myself. My idea of jazz clubs comes from movies, where they are 1930s places with Louis Armstrong music, or smoky 1950s places with atonal beat music. Obviously, I am off base.
Do tell me a bit about the music and dancing, as we have never gone out after dinner in Paris for anything but a walk or boat ride.

I copied this from a place on line. I hope it helps.

The dancers, when I was there ( I mean the Caveau) were quite a bunch of characters. They were dressed as if they were in the forties, ladies had their hair and make up done accordingly. They danced swing, and danced very well. We had a blast watching them!

Well, interesting as this is, but the place inspired me to take swing lessons when I returned home. The jazz when I was there was a form called "be-bop" jazz. The dance as they call it in Paris is called "Rock-n'Roll", but it is like our swing. My Mom and I were sent there after eating at a Greek restaurant close by. We went down and almost immediately each of us was asked to dance. My Mom had taken swing lessons, so she fit right in. I am a pretty good dancer, but had never taken swing. I gave it my best shot and decided that next time I went I would have the steps down! This time I will have my husband with me, and hopefully our two series of lessons will pay off!

For a different type of evening, if you like French music, you could try Le Lapin Agile, which is in a nicer part of Montmartre

I have not been there but will go next time I am in Paris. I understand that it sells drinks but you should eat before the show.

Paris at night means to me one place: Buddha Bar at Rue Boissy d'Anglas-the tiny rue between the American Embassy at Place de la Concorde and the Hotel Crillon-(the Buddha Bar is in back of the Hotel Crillon, actually) Buddha Bar is where all the beautiful people in Paris go-and those people are quite lovely indeed. The Buddha Bar albums are sold all over the world-unique mixes of world music-a two level bar with beautiful people above and dining on the lower level-good, not great, Asian fusion cuisine, but my very favorite: a 20-30 ft. high golden Buddha serenely presiding over both floors. It's not quite Bed Supperclub in Bangkok (possibly the most unique, fun dinner/nightclub in the world, imo), but BB is definitely hip, beautiful, surprisingly unpretentious and serves excellent drinks-virtually impossible to get into on the weekend, but on a weeknight your chances are much better.

Maybe I should use a new thread for this, but it does relate well. Has anyone been to a female impersonator show in Paris? I think a couple are named Madame Arthur and Chez Michou. I have been to one similar in Vegas, and I have never seen my husband laugh so hard in my life.

Hi Celtic,
Sure you up for the Moulin Rouge.....I found the area to be very offensive some 20 years ago. Not something I expected but perhaps they have cleaned up the area and their attitudes towards the women who work in the area.

Sarah, Although I am not sure about spending precious time and money on the Moulin Rouge I don't think she has to worry about getting there. Most of the time people who go to the show take a bus as I did with a tour company. The price really isn't much more and just about everyone who sells the tickets includes the bus transportation. The "Pigelle" area is still a red light district. I don't think walking around there at any time of day or night pleasant, but getting to Moulin Rouge should not be a problem.

Pigalle is as Pigalle has always been. It is a red light district. What has changed over the years is the amount of one the street prostitution as opposed to brothels (thinly disguised as bars and clubs).
There are also loads of sex shops and porno stores.
I would also say it’s not that dangerous an area as there is a highish police presence, and it’s a crowded place.
It’s not my cup of tea at any level really, but chacun a son gout as the locals would say.

wtgirl not sure how you understood "offensive" to mean unsafe.
This was a long time ago and the area could have changed but
...remember and outdoor catwalk, women were walking down with little clothing (in freezing weather) and then an announcer with a microphone talking as they walked. Just looked like what you would think a slave auction block would look like. Not what you would anticipate with any Las Vegas review promo, more poor women who are recognized as street walkers and possibly substance abusers at home.
that was 20 years ago though. Not something I expected and well below the standards of even 42nd street in NYC (at that time). Was a shocker for me and will keep me out of this area on any future trips.

Sorry I did not clarify. Yes, I understood. As I got on the bus and drove down the road from the Moulin Rouge I saw these people hanging outside these places half dressed in February (things haven't changed much obviously). But, my point was that if you take a tour bus it can be avoided and if you really must see a Parisian cabaret, by all means go. I would assume other modes of transportation could be used and you could still avoid the worst area getting to the show. If I remember correctly, the area directly surrounding Moulin Rouge was not that bad, but the real seedy area was farther down in the Pigelle area.

Here is a link describing many first accounts of the Pigelle red light district. Just take this with a grain of salt. Don't miss the show if you don't want to, just be smart about it.
