Where to go in Italy's Lake region

My husband and I are considering a trip to the Lake Region of Italy around mid-June. Any suggestions of must-sees and places to avoid? We do not enjoy the very touristy noisy places. Some action OK, but need a place to escape to when we prefer quiet. We are history and art lovers, enjoy good food, like to soak up some of the local culture, and take in the landmarks, sights and natural beauty of a place.

How much time do you have for this visit?

And where will you be coming from/going to?

same questions as above--what is your itinerary? The "lakes" are really 3 destinations and it depends. Here is a sneak preview of one of my favorite parts of the lakes---Lago Orta and Lago Maggiore are about :45 apart and make a great combo:

We will be travelling from Munich and are somewhat flexible on the time, but say around one week.

Lake Como is my favourite place; this website gives quite a lot of information about the area

Given a week I would stay in 2 locations--probaly Bellagio and Stresa, and hit Lugano in transition between them.
