Looking for suggestions on where to go in Italy at the end of February. We would like a combination of city and a smaller town/country. Cinque Terre and Amalfi sound appealing, but is worthwhile to got there in February? We're flying into and out of Rome.

this time of yoear I would go south - Amalfi, Pompeii, Sorento would all be lovely.

I am going to disagree with my fellow posters here and suggest that the Amalfi, Sorrento and the like (summer resorts) are really much less appealing in February. The maritime coast is rather dreary until April/May and much will be closed. Frankly, for my money THIS is the time to really see the city destinations you haven't had a chance to see earlier: more Rome, Florence even Venice are much less full this time of year, yet lively. Unless you have a taste for the melancholy, you may find the resort towns quite dull.

I agree with LJ. I have enjoyed my February visits to Rome and Florence and appreciate the cheaper hotel rates, fewer crowds and overall different ambiance these cities have at this off time.
