I donít think the OP has planned too much time in the UK. It is expensive in London, but most other parts of the country are cheaper, and not touristy at all. Take it from me, I am an American who retired in England and find it easy to live on my military pension and US Social Security retirement benefits.

Just be sure you have health insurance for all your time in Europe. European tax payers will not be happy to pay your healthcare bills, and in the UK the NHS is now very strict about foreigners paying their way,
Not all doctors in France or anywhere else speak English, many do but many don't.

A friend who spends a couple of months every summer in France at a family home does a car rental that is essentially buying the car and then selling it back to the company at the end of the trip- it's much cheaper. Something to do with taxes. You could keep the same car to go from place to place. If I were doing this, I would want to spend at least one month in Italy. We rented a house in the Florence area for a month once (March-April- the weather was lovely), and made day trips to the smaller towns. Where we were, in the counrtry, would have been ideal for kids. Eastern Europe is still cheaper than western, and there are some lovely towns in the Czech Republic. It may be a little out of the way for you, but I absolutely love Estonia! I was there on business, and we circled the country over the space of a week. We stayed in hotels that had pools/saunas/ hot tubs in the basement! They were sprawling places, with snack bars, water features, lounge chairs, etc. 5 year olds would love it! Also try to spend some time in Scandanavian. Copenhagen is a great place to be in the summer. People bicycle everywhere, there are great markets, and it's very safe.
