Where to go for a fun New Year's Eve?
My 20-year-old son is currently doing a semester in Paris, and has very limited internet access, so I'm posting this on his behalf. He plans to get a Eurailpass over his winter break, and travel to northern Italy, Switzerland, Austria, ending up in Prague. He's trying to find out where in those areas would be a good place for him and his friends to spend New Year's Eve -- they're looking for a fun party atmosphere, public celebration, etc. Sounds like Madrid would be perfect, but unfortunately that doesn't work into their schedule.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Why don't you give your son a few euros so he can go to an internet cafe sometimes? they are all over central Paris and rates are fairly cheap over in the Bastille area where there are quite a few.
Anyway, not sure how his schedule is in timing, but I've read that Prague is one of the top fun NY eve spots in Europe, so he should try to work that out somehow, I'd say.

For New Years eve, Vienna is the place, plenty of celebrations all around the city. The old city is mobbed with people in a massive party atmosphere and at midnight the whole city is lit by huge displays of fireworks.

The biggest party for youths in europe is in Amsterdam - the whole week between Christmas and New Years the town is packed with young and old folks from all over Europe - it's the absolute busiest time of year here and booking a hostel or hotel adhead of time is imperative. Otherwise except for some New Year's Eve celebrations this week normally is dead as a doornail in most towns. Prague might be the most liveliest - it's hard to imagine the rather dour IME Swiss or Austrians celebrating anything anytime! I suppose Rome could be neat on New Years Eve.

Operaman- anywhere specific you might recommend for New Years in Vienna? My boyfriend and I will be there this year, so I'm trying to figure out where to go. We're staying in Singerstrasse right next to Stephandsdom. Any help is much appreciated!
