Where to go for a day near to Milan??

Hi! We're spending six days in Milan in July and would like to go somewhere by the water for a day. I've been to Liguria but not to the Lakes. What places would you recommend to see? Genoa, Lago di Garda or some other place? A nice beach, lots to see, nice restaurants etc. would be perfect. Any ideas? Thanks!

Take a train to the city of Como about a 40-minute ride) and then take the hydrofoil to Bellagio (45 minutes away).

"Amen" to Howard's post! Or try Varenna, also on Lake Como, the next village up from Bellagio on the ferry stop. All are just too beautiful for words!

Actually, if the train and boat schedules offer late connections, you could possibly do both towns in one day. Both are worth the time.

Take the train up to Como--40 min utes and then have lunch at the Villa D'Este--walk around the grounds, take water taxi back to Como and browse the shops and cathedral.
