Where to go and what to do in Switzerland
 

My husband and I are going on a 10 day trip in mid September for our anniversary. We are flying in and out of Milan and spending the first 2 or 3 nights at Lake Como. We are planning to go into Switzerland after that and are looking for suggestions of the best places to go and things to do. Would appreciate any advice and tips.

What draws you to Switzerland?

For me, it's the gorgeous scenery and the endless hiking opportunities.

The 'best places' really depends on your particular interests.

Logistically, it might make sense for you to explore the Ticino.

It would be much easier to spend your first nights along Lake Maggiore, as nice as Lake Como, but much easier to reach from Milan Malpensa airport.
If you like high mountains, you could go from there (Stresa) by train to Zermatt/Matternorn (3 hrs journey).

If you prefer the middle part of Lake Como (some 2 1/2 hrs from Milan Malpensa airport), you could enter Switzerland via Bernina railway and spend some time in the Engadin area.
Swiwtzerlan has not only mountains, lakes and vineyards, but tons of museums, medieval city centers, castles, cathedrals, outstanding modern architecture, chocolate factories, cheese diaries.........

One trip we enjoyed to Switzerland had this itinerary:
Milan, Lake Maggiore, Grindelwald, Pontresina, Lake Como, Milan. We rented a car as we left Milan and returned it to Milan MXP at the end of this trip. Amazing mountain scenery!

Did you take the Bernina Express or just travel strictly by car?

That question wasn't for me, but keep in mind you absolutely do not need a car in Switzerland! They have the best public transport system in the world - efficient and easy to navigate. Cars are a PITA in cities and trains and buses will get you just about anywhere you want to go in Switzerland. This may not be the case in Italy, however.

We drove, picking up and dropping off a car in Milan. We had to buy a Swiss Vignette(for highways) for the car. When we return, we will use the Swiss trains.
