Where to go & What to do in Strasbourg
I'll be in Strasbourg post-Christmas, so the family can enjoy the tail end of the Christmas market. I'd like to visit Germany for a day, but don't know what town. Is there something special that happens on New Years Eve? Should I be prepared for a little snow?

Yes, you should definitely be prepared for some snow - perhaps quite a bit.
The best daytrip to Germany from Strasbourg, IMO, is Freiburg. Lovely university town that's especially cheerful around the holidays. Don't know about NYE. |
In Strasbourg don;t miss the Cathedral, the pedistrian old town, the Petite France area, the boat ride on the canal and the Musee Alsacienne (folk museum) as well as the 2 museums in the Rohan Palace.
You might want to take a day to drive down to Colmar - an exquisite little town with a great museum - and see a coupe of the little wine towns on the way back. |
i hear many of strasbourg's venues are closed on sundays, with the exception of museums? is this true with colmar as well?
|
Alsace-Moselle still operates under the strict German religious laws, so everything is indeed closed on Sunday, with a few exceptions during the Sundays before Christmas.
I recommend staying at one of the hotels across from the train station, because it is close to the center, convenient for the tram and ultra-convenient for day trips on the train to other places. |

DIY fireworks. Don't forget to blast a few rockets like everybody does. They're available at German supermarkets from 3 days before. |
