We're big fans of Prague. Spent two weeks in May 2003, starting in Prague and ending in Budapest, with a few days in Vienna in the middle. We spent five days in Prague and wished for more. It is a wonderful city with much to see and do. We too saw a couple groups of Brit males intent on getting drunk, but they were certainly easy to ignore.
We took trains between Prague and Vienna and then Vienna to Budapest. Very easy and pleasant trips.
I have a list of websites for Prague, as well as some other info I compiled for our trip. If you would like any or all of it, please e-mail me.

i worked in prague for several months and at visited it a few times for pleasure. until staying there for a while, i thought the party reputation was overblown...i think it was in the spring when the lads descended and the place (at times) had an ugly feel. lets face it, prague is known for its inexpensive sex...this attracts groups of hard drinking chaps from all over europe.
this is just a fact of life in prague and i don't think it should ruin anyones visit.

The "lager louts" only come out at night in Prague, like vampires. You can usually spot them around Wenceslaus Square. They usually hang out in the "cheap" joints, not the more affluent tourist restaurant. Some of the English blokes I ran into at a stag party in a restaurant on Stepanska were quite well-behaved. Not everyone from the UK who drinks is an arsehole.

We've been to both Amsterdam and Prague and found both enjoyable.
Our trip to the Czech Republic was this past May and we had a wonderful trip. We spent a week between Prague and Cesky Krumlov - with some stops on the drive in between. I can't say enough good about it. We never felt we were in a "party oriented" area. We stayed in Lesser Town in Prague and I would choose that area again. It was close enough to all the sights and still quiet and relaxing.
We only spent 3 days in Amsterdam in 2001. Again - we had a had a great visit. There is alot to see in Amsterdam and some of the museums are wow!
Pick one and go ... you really don't have to worry about the atmosphere.
Have FUN!
