Where to find snow in Europe in Mid December
So I have posted on some other threads about where to go for my second week on honeymoon. We are liking the cities of Mittenwald and Rothenburg Germany but wondering if we might get snow in mid December...any other beautiful towns with photography potential that you know of in Europe that usually has snow around that time? If so please send you suggestions this way. Also neat side trips from the different locations. Thanks in advance for the help!!!

We were in Salzburg and Fuessen the middle of last December. Salzburg had a bit of snow and the Neuschwanstein castle was covered in a blanket...beautiful!

I was in Munich and the surrounding area mid Dec in 2007 and the whole countryside was covered in snow. It did snow in Munich as I walked around the christmas markets but did not stick to the ground.
I would say you have a chance of snow anywhere in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. There are beautiful towns in these three countries. Of course no one can ever predict the weather!! |
Thanks for the info...keep the suggestions coming!

Innsbruck, Austria is beautiful then (or any time)!

Hi heartofthesouth,
I spent a month in Mittenwald from Dec 06-Jan 07, and found it did not snow that much. We would get the odd snowfall, but it would not stay for long. In fact, they even trucked in some snow to make the snowbar in the center of the village! But it was still very cozy and sweet (outdoor cafes would lay out blankets so customers could sit outside and enjoy the ambiance). I would say if snow is important, that you need to get up to some altitude -- either Zermatt or the St. Moritz area in Switzerland. However, I think Zermatt is already completely sold out (hotels generaly require a stay of a week and guests make reservations for next year as they are leaving at the end of the current year . . .). Have fun! s |
Stubai Glacier near Innsbruck.

Val Gardena in the Dolomites. Two hours south of Innsbruck.

We had about a foot of snow fall when we visited Krakow between Christmas and New Year, It was certainly very photogenic. I don't know how guaranteed the snow is though.

Snow is not guaranteed anywhere in Central Europe in mid December anymore. Definitely not in the flat regions. Mittenwald has a good chance of snow. Rothenburg probably not.
Scandinavia has better chances, but days are short there in December. If you want a Christmassy feeling AND snow your best bet is probably somewhere in the Bavarian Alps - like Mittenwald. Another option are the mid-range mountains in Northern/Eastern Germany, like Harz, Thuringian Forest, Erzgebirge. Btw, the latter is famous for its Christmas items. |
Mittenwald is a gem of a town! Maybe you can head up the Zugspitz in Garmish to at least 'see the snow' but it is tough that time of the year.
Maybe Lech Austria? Pretty town/Valley John |
How about Salzburg in December...Much snow?
|
I was in Salzburg also last Dec. and there was a light dusting of snow mostly where the sun did not hit, like the banks of the river had snow on the shaded side but not on the other.
Outside of town the countryside was covered in snow. |
Thanks for the info Martha...That would be great for me...as long as the snow is close enough for us to take pictures and have a little fun....
