Where to eat in Salzburg?

What are some recommendations for good restaurants in Salzburg? Thank you.

We were in Salzburg in May and really enjoyed it. We ate at several decent restaurants but our favorite was Stiftskeller St. Peter. Some may consider it touristy, but for history buffs like ourselves it was a "must" to eat at a restaurant that has been around since 803 and that Charlemagne supposedly ate at! The restaurant is near St. Peters and the cemetary. The food was very good (we both had schnitzel, and I highly recommend the apfelstruedel!) and the atmosphere cozy and warm. We vowed to go back the next time we are in Salzburg. For a review, check out http://www.fodors.com/miniguides/mgr...operty_id=6718.

It's not exactly a restaurant, but the Augustiner beer hall is a great way to spend an evening (or afternoon). There are a number of vendors in the building where you can get food cafeteria-style, which is a terrible term to apply to some very good food. The schweinhaxe we had were particularly good.

Agree the Stiffskeller is a good casuale choice. Definitely not gourmet anything - but inexpensive and fun with enormous portions of plain but tasty food. There was a small group of musicians playing a something and I think a zither the night we were there.

We also found a really nice cafe - two floors with an outdoor balcony on the square looking up at the castle - which had very good lunches.

We went to a big, noisy beer hall type place called something like the 'Friendly Ape', and it was great fun. Lots of sausage, sauerkraut, garlic soup, dumplings and great beer. You sit a large tables with locals and backpackers and enjoy the company.
It's located in an interesting area, just a short walk across the bridge from the old city.

We liked Trattoria La Stella very much. It's part of the Sternbräu Gastronomie Welt that houses various types of restaurants. La Stella is on Getreidegasse, which is close to the Rathaus.

The Stiftskeller St. Peter was one of my favorites. In 1973, my sister and I ate there 3 nights in a row. We ate 'Chateaubriand for two' I think it was less that $4.00 for both of us!!!

In 1987 I wanted to show it to my wife. We had the rudest waiter I have ever had. I hope he is no longer there.
