A little advertisement for a special restaurant we found by accident in Trastevere:

They employ staff at all posts with and without special needs.
We enjoyed the welcoming, warm and attentive waitstaff as much as their delicious food.
You should not fear any language or communication barrier as their menu is bi-lingual Italian/English
And the waiters had been very patient and took extra effort in dealing with our very limited Italian.

Rocket79 - you say that you used to be a food writer and appreciate seasonal food but you don't say (unless I missed it) when you are traveling.

This is important if you have any preferences - for example, who wants to eat carciofi in the summer months. The other thing is that most of the most popular dishes in Rome are actually considered "cucina povera" i.e. with very simple and cheap (or were) ingredients. This is quite strange as Rome during the times of the Romans had the most expensive and exotic culinary experiences in the known world at the time (and possibly ever since):
