Oddly enough I had one of the best Indian meals I've ever had in a restaurant on Simon Stevinplein. Just off this square are a couple of pubs, including 't Brugs Beertje, which offers hundreds of different Belgian beers.

I can't remember the name, but if you are standing in the main square, with what I believe is the Town Hall to your left, take the first street on the right (exiting the square halfway along). Just on the right, or on the first right hand side corner, is the most liveliest Italian restaurant (with tables upstairs as well as downstairs), would recommend the Garlic Prawns! If you have time, take a gondola ride through the city's canals! There are other restaurants along the edges of the square, but they are quite expensive.

KangaGirl,
Sorry, but the main square doesn't have the Town Hall on it! However, I think you talk about the Italian restaurant in the St-Amandstraat, which is not bad.
For mussels, jamles, go to Breydel and Deconinck in th Breydelstraat, between the Grote Markt (with the Belfry) and the Burgplein (with the Town Hall).
For exquisite food: De Gouden Harynck, but make a reservation well in advance.

As a general rule, don't eat on the Grote Markt, go in the side streets. Don't worry, nobody has ever died of hunger in Brugge.
