We are going to be traveling all around europe and i am not sure where to eat, what to eat, and what to drink, any ideas/tips...thnxs

Good question, driveucrazy. When you get the answer could you help me out. I know someone who's coming to the US. Could you tell me where he should eat and what he should drink and eat?

May I make some suggestions to follow up on the above hints?

Which cities, how long each place?
What is your budget like?
Do you want casual, dressy, or a mix?
What kinds of food and drink are you absolutely sure you like or don't like?
How many are there of you, and ages?

I always think it's nice to try the local specialties when traveling in Europe, so you might want to look out for beef cheeks, donkey sausage, goose liver, brains, tripe, blood sausage, raw herring, snails, pig's ear and pig's feet, wild boar, veal kidney....there are SO many to choose from you'll be overwhelmed!

Drive, at age 22, and with a tight budget, I suggest you not worry about it too much. Play it by ear. There will be lots of inexpensive places to eat and other travelers you run into will suggest places.

You might invest in a copy of one of the budget travel guides which will steer you toward the better of the inexpensive restaurants.

If you want to splurge somewhere, you can search on here by city and turn up lots of great places to eat.

Drink "house" wine that comes by pitcher or carafes in restaurants. Keep your eyes open for great street food stands (different stuff in different cities, crepes in Paris, sausages somewhere else, etc.). Ethnic is always food (had both excellent Italian & Greek in Amsterdam for example, rumor has it that Indian takeaway is all over London).

I have never planned ahead or used a guidebook to choose where to eat. My method is when you start to get hungry, look around. Most places have a menu with prices posted outside. It's easy enough, really.

An easy way to answer this question is to just say head on down to your nearest bookstore and browse the travel books section. Pick a Europe book that suits your needs and then go to the restaurants that sound good!

For Sicily, you should check out a board with a more youthful skew; Elizabeth's list of Sicilian restaurants pick is exhaustive and fantastically detailed but pricey for folks your age. Italy can be pricey if you don't know where the good buys are and you will find that Chowhound or Lonely Planet are both better for your budget and demographic IMHO.

Amsterdam: Hard Rock Cafe (by the Casino); find a pancake house; can always fall back on the fast-food joints.

Paris: look for 'deli' type places where you can buy prepared food, especially the Asian "traiteurs"- very good. Plenty of "boulangeries" to buy pizza, quiche, sandwich things, sometimes salads. If you want to fill up cheap go to Flunch (cafeteria) by les Halles. Try to save a bit of money to go to at least one decent bistro or restaurant (search on this forum for "Paris restaurant").

Chinatown area in London has some pretty reasonably priced eats (for London, anyway)

In Dublin, look for the pubs and eat focus on the lunch offerings. Pub fare will often be the basic meat and potatoes variety, but not bad and not that expensive. Lunch is usually the big meal of the day. What to drink? Guinness

You will stay at a hotel or hostel. Simply ask the staff there for recommendations for restaurants. Tell them your budget and then follow their advice. They know the area better than anyone and if you're on a budget, they probably are too.

Good luck. Never eat at an empty restaurant. There's a reason for it! 8^>

Isn't that at the heart of successful trolling - - to keep you just uncertain enough - - to DRIVE U CRAZY!?

I'd recommend - - in each of the destinations mentioned - - just start asking around "have you seen Faith? or Bambi? do you know where they ate?"

Failing that, I'd recommend renting a car, and then just always ask at the gas station for a list of good local restaurants. And anticipating that driveucrazy will need help figuring out where to go for gas, I'd recommend asking at a restaurant for a list of good local gas stations.
