My experience is from..... omygawd...... 15 years ago

There wasn't [back then in the ice age] as much tourist "tack" as you find elsewhere. That may have changed of course. Absent the recommendation of a specific shop I'd just head for the major department store in town. They're bound to have a decent selection.

That's what I did in Finland that trip when I realized that "cruise to the north cape" meant COLD and I wasn't prepared. Where was this forum when I needed you?

Difficult questions, Tess.
Quality most often goes with price.
Cheap handicrafts at uttermost quality, thoug, are free. Mothers and sisters make them for gifts, for their sons and daughters.
Good advice: Do not shop sweaters in 7-elevens, even if it is possible. Better spend some money, to guarantee woollen quality.
In Oslo "Norway Design" is a high quality shop, and so is "Husfliden". Husfliden translates to handicrafts, and is a nationwide organisation, highly estimated. Go there, and at least you will get very good advices even if you do not buy their sweater juwels.
http://www.husfliden.no/ may be a site to visit.
Bjorn, Oslo
arer

I bought one in a small town outside of Bergen at the Dale outlet. I could kick myself for not buying more. I bought one for myself and couldn't decide between two. They were each $50. Now I think ,how could I have been struggling to decide between them? I should have bought them both for that price! My sons bought some on the streets of Oslo from the equivalent of street vendors. They are still beautiful. They didn't fall apart in 3 years! They weren't very expensive as one would expect from a street vendor.
Lesley

I bought a sweater in Flam (I believe that is the name of the "town." It is the place where you catch the boat to see the fiords after the train ride "Norway in a Nutshell.") The saleslady said the sweaters were less expensive there than in Oslo. I don't know if she was telling me the truth, but she really seemed honest. I know you asked about Bergen or Oslo, but so many people take the Norway in a Nutshell that I thought I would pass that info along in case you are doing so. You will love Norway. It is so BEAUTIFUL and the people are very nice.

Hi,

I asked the same question of my tour director when I was in Norway last July. His response was that there are sweaters everywhere, so buy one when it jumps out at you! The tour I was on was heading to North Cape before Oslo, so when one in Bergen yelled out "Buy Me", I did. I had another sweater calling me in Balestrand, at the hotel where we spent the night (Kvinkne's Hotel). The last stop in our trip was Oslo, and I was very glad that I bought sweaters earlier. I think the selection was much better in Bergen, and so were the prices, but not by much.
Have fun - it is mindboggling! Have a wonderful trip!
