Where to buy good shoes in Paris?
Would like to buy a pair of good for walking shoes; Mephisto or Arche, or other. Where can I go for a not in the US selection? Galleries Lafayette? Are they less than what they cost in the States? Thank you in advance.

I have bought Arches in Paris, and yes, they are less expensive there. There are several Arche stores, I believe (check the Arche web site) but I went to one off Blvd. St. Germain on Rue de Dragon (Dragon metro). Dragon runs into Rue de Cherche Midi, which was a great shopping street, lots of unique clothing stores.

There is a mephisto store right near Galleries lafayette. As far as I can remember, they did not sell mephisto at Galerie Lafayette.<BR><BR>I bought one pair of boots and 2 pairs of sandals for the same price as I paid for 1 pair of sandals in the States.

If you write to Mephisto, they will send you a list of stores in and around Paris. These are Mephisto only stores and it includes a list of stores that have a Mephisto department in them. But by far the best bet is to go to the Mephisto only stores. I bought two pairs of Sandals last January for the price of one pair here. These were new styles and not on sale. And they have styles that I haven't seen in the states. My husband purchased a pair of shoes that retails for $250 here for less than $100. These were on sale because it was Jan. I believe it is the same store that Lisa mentioned. I cannot remember the address. If you are lucky enough to go in Jan or June, you will really get great bargains. But the prices are still much better than here.

I bought Arche shoes at Galeries Lafayette and they had a big selection. They were considerably less expensive than in the States. The sales personnel was attentive and helpful as well. The shoe dept. there is very big and you will find many good brands of shoes.

Carol, Thanks for asking this question. Instead of saying you took the words out of mouth, I'll say, you took the thought right out of my head! I'll be doing a little (cough cough) shopping there in a couple of weeks, and was wondering the same thing. Thanks everyone!<BR><BR>Wendy, that's good to know that it's not just museums that's closed on Mondays!

When you say "these shoes" I assume you're referring to the mephistos, which are not pretty, at least not the ones I bought a few years ago. Arche are a totally different animal. Very cool. I have some green suede boots I bought a year or so and get so many compliments when I wear them. Definitely not ugly.

My dd and d-in-law bought their Mephisto sandals the second day of our trip and wore them for the remaining days. They were half the price in the DC area, and d-in-law went back for two more pair. I couldn't get past the looks and left empty handed. "Our" store was on Av. du Gen. Leclerc, near the Denfert Metro. http://www.mephistoparis-sud.com/

Zowel. I will have to give you credit. My Mephisto oxfords are really ugly. BUT, I can wear them all day doing anything and my feet never hurt. When you have wide feet as I do, it is not always easy to find shoes that are comfortable and stylish and, of course, forget cheap. I just cannot abide my feet hurting when I travel especially.

Hope I'm not stepping on Sandra Gustafson's feel here <g> when I <BR>mention her wonderful book 'Great<BR>Sleeps in Paris' wherein she names<BR>rue Meslay (Metro: Republique) as<BR>'an entire street devoted to shoes'.<BR><BR>As my entire life is devoted to shoes<BR>I will be tripping the light fantastic<BR>there this Spring!
