The Pont de Vecchio is filled from one end to the other with jewellery shops - that's the only type of shop on the bridge. There may be other shops in Florence that sell gold jewellery, but I can't help with tips for them, although some other posters may know of some.

One thing you need to be aware of is what they mean by gold. I have seen "gold" as little as 10 karat (not sold in the US) for the less expensive pieces - so be sure to check the karat you are getting. Also, shop online before you go - to be sure of what you should be paying. IMHO the values are in designs that are unique - and often not inexpensive - rather than in the most basic ones.
For interesting pieces check out the real gold replicas in some of the museum shops.
