where to buy China

I need help from all the well traveled fodorites out there. I'll be traveling to Germany,
Prague and Budapest at Christmas time. I want to buy a nice set of china but don't
want to spend an arm and a leg. Out of these three places where can I get the most
bang for the dollar?

Hi B,

I think that Germany is better known for china than CZ or Hungary.

If you are serious about your china, spend it. I have regretted not buying a set of Flora Danaca 30 years ago just because I would have had to borrow the money.

To go with your china, stop at the Moser shop in Prague and get a good set of Bohemian crystal.

Here's an article about the well-known (and expensive) Hungarian Herend china.

I have a set of Herend china and it is indeed lovely, but very expensive. Since you don't want to spend an arm and a leg, your best bet for inexpensive china would be Germany. Herend does make a less expensive line which, to my taste, is more suitable for everyday dishware. Compare prices in the USA if that is where you live because the exchange rate is not in your favor to say nothing of packing (can get VERY expensive) and shipping costs.

Thanks for all your good replies.

Ira, I will keep your good advice in mind. I too have regrets from some of my travels not bringing things back.

Gradmere, what a great article! Thanks.

Grinisa, thanks and I will keep in mid
your suggestion about checking in the states first. I had a purchase shipped
from Japan and I know how expensive shipping can be. I really need to do
a bit of homework.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND
GOOD ADVICE.
