Where to after London and Paris? Alsace? Black Forest? Switzerland?

Hi -
We love small villages, people, wine and food. We'd love to see Alsace, maybe Black Forest and perhaps soem areas of Switzerland if possible. Is Interlaken too far to drive?
We will be flying out of Paris, so may end the trip there. Any thought on what to do for a week, between London and Paris? We were thinking maybe train from London to Paris, then train to Starsbourg, pick up car there??? Then, do wine road in Alsace for 2 days or so, then??? Accomodation recommendations would be appreciated, too. Something under 100 EU. We would love to see Switz., but don't know that there is time. Is there time for Munich?

Thoughts on Alsace and Black Forect much appreciated. I have been reading about these areas and am overwhelmed!
Thanks very much.

Alsace is beautiful and definitely worth a trip. We visited Strasbourg and took the train from Paris-a long journey (4+ hours) but worth it. We stayed at Hotel de l'Europe which was nice but Hotel Cardinal de Rohan has lower rates and is only 50 yds. from the cathedral. Strasbourg has the medieval buildings and canals-very picturesque.
We took the train from Strasbourg to Bern which is another small picturesque town. However, there's not much to see for more than a day. It's a short journey from Strasbourg to Bern by train.

We loved Alsace, and you will too.

Here is a link to accommodations in the area: http://www.visit-alsace.com/hotels/hotels_ang_3e.html

We stayed at L'Ami Fritz, in Ottrott, for about the price you are looking.

Strasbourg is nice, but another big city. Go there for a 1/2 trip to see the cathedral.

Follow the wine route and you will be very happy. Black Forest is nice too, but if I had to chose between the two, go for Alsace.

Basel is worth a visit. Near Basel there is the Vitra Museum of chairs in Weil (Germany), which sounds much less interesting than it is. There is also the Fondation Beyeler for modern art (a streetcar ride from the center of town). The old town is nice to visit. You could do it in a day's trip from Strasbourg, as I did it in one day from Freiburg.

You will probably want to spend a day or two in Strasbourg, plus two days on the wine raod, perhaps dropping down to Basel. From Basel, drive back through a section of the Black Forest, or pass by the Kaiserstuhl wine area near Freiburg, and that will cover your week. Forget Munich.

Strasbourg or St. Hippolyte (or lots of other places on the northern end of Alsace) - - or Oberkirch or Baden-Baden or many other options at the northern end of the Black Forest.

Stay at either one, and you are close to the other to explore one on day one, and the other on day two - - and whichever you like best on the subsequent days. Comparable, but different, you could fall in love with either.

Best wishes,

Rex
[email protected]
