Where should we eat our first night in Rome
Our first flight leaves next Friday at 12:30pm and we will arrive in Rome on Sat. at about 4:00pm (Rome time). Assuming our family of four ( Me, DH and 2 kids) will get to our hotel around 5:30. We are staying at the Albergo Cesari right near the Pantheon. Have written down suggestions already of restuarants people have recommended. But just curious: where would you recommend four tired, hungry but very excited people eat for their first meal? Would like it near the Pantheon so we can walk, casual but good food and preferably not need a reservation. Hope I am not asking for too much!

It's a bit of a hike to Campo de Fiori, but check out Ditirambo:

We had a great meal there--casual, but good food. Warning: if it matters to you, any restaurant that is open before 8 p.m. and near the Pantheon is probably a tourist trap.

Thanks coffeeaddict (my DH is one too!) Yes, it does matter that it is a tourist trap, but I already figured that we would need to eat late. 7:00 if we are lucky but most likely 8:00pm. Just want it to be a good meal when we get there.

there are several good restaurants on the streets leading off the square that the Pantheon is on. I believe one restaurant we ate at was called Daniel's. Very casual but amazing, fresh and tasty Italian food. it was on one of the streets (maybe via dorfani or via dei pastini)running north from the pantheon. Just around the corner from del senato hotel. anyway if you walk in that area there are numerous restaurants to choose from.

Please do not miss out on the gelato! Make a detour to the Trevi Fountain (a must at night) and hunt down San Crispino. Do not settle for imitators, or any other gelato place. We went back to San Crispino about three times in six days--it was that good!
Il Gelato di San Crispino. Via Paneterria 42. Rome, Italy. Tel: 39 06-704-504-12.

I like Ditirambo but you will have to wait until at least 7:30 and should have reservations. Why not go for pizza/bruschetta at Da Baffetto? They open at 7:00, maybe even earlier, and if you get there early you won't have to wait in line. Nothing like starting out a trip to Rome with its best pizza. And the kids will love it.

I would ask at the hotel desk and go somewhere close because you be pretty tired after the overnight flight. There are some suggestions on this site for the Pantheon area and I think there is a Hotel with a rooftop cafe close by.
