Where should I go with my family?
 

So a couple of summers ago, my mom, sister, uncle and I spent 10 days visiting Amsterdam and Paris. We all absolutely loved it (except for my sister) and we talk about the trip all the freaking time. My younger brother, who is 10, and my dad now are starting to show interest in visiting Europe after hearing all of our stories. If we do go anywhere, we plan to fly to Paris and spend a couple of nights there. That's about all we know we want to do. I am struggling of thinking of somewhere else to go at this point. My brother and dad aren't in to big cities, but we still want to experience some culture. So I guess my question is, where could go for about a week that isn't a huge city, but still is a good home base to see lots of cool things. They seem to want to take a train from Paris. We will probably go in May or June so the weather won't be a problem.

If you are into castles go to the Moire valley - gorgeous.
If you are into older civilisations go to Brittany and see the dolmens and menhirs.
If you are into wine go to the bourgogne (Beaune dijon).
If you are into roman ruins go to Rhône area (armes pont du Gard Nîmes orange)
If you are into WW2 go to Normandy and visit Omaha beach pointe du hoc et. With a stop in time for bayeux and its tapisserie.
If you are into beaches go to the Riviera and visit the calanques and la promenade des anglais in cannes.
If you like mines and beer go to the north.
If you want some hiking in the middle if nowhere go to les Cévennes or Corsica.
If you want to surf go to pays basques at Biarritz.
If you like canyoning go to the Ardèche.
If you like good food and medieval castles and walks and wine go to Dordogne.
If you like oysters go to La Rochelle and arcachon.
What else ?

Also, it doesn't have to be in France. We are willing to fly almost anywhere in western/central Europe

if you are willing for a regional flight, Venice was perfect. We took our family of 5 on off/shoulder season. It was gorgeous, quiet, no cars... Just the most perfect place I have ever been. Just a thought!

Hi if you are into gorgeous scenery, huge mountains (Eiger, Jungfrau,Monch) go to Wengen, small village 1hr by train from Zurich. (See German film/Northface). lift is right in Wengen that takes you up to the hiking paths or Mannlichen with incredible scenery and easier or harder walks or back down on lift to village. then maybe train down to Zermatt (more touristy) but the Matterhorn and Gorgernot.(sp).... Switzerland is more expensive, so try to go to smaller villages. What are your fathers and the 10 yr olds interest?

London, Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, the Royal Crown jewels in the Tower of London in a dark room with lights shining on them.

Germany, Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria or Rotenburg outside Wurtzburg by 45 minutes. So ,many places and so little time and money to see it all. Sue

Like Sue above, I immediately thought of Switzerland. The Lauterbrunnen Valley is just gorgeous.

You could visit Paris for a few days, then fly to Switzerland and fly home from there.
