Where NOT to stay in Venice?
 

We will be traveling to Italy in May and in Venice for 3 nights. We are looking for hotels in approx. 100-125 Euro range. Have found a few, but I'm not sure about the area. We don't really mind a 30 min walk to sightsee. I guess I am more asking for safety reasons. Are there any unsafe/rundown areas in Venice that we should stay away from? Does anyone have particular suggestions for hotels in this range? Thank you in advance!

You don't want to stay in Mestre as it's not IN Venice proper; it's on the mainland. The Lido is often a cheaper option but that too in not IN Venice. It's a separate island that has cars so you don't get quite the same experience. The area around the train station is not as attractive as other areas. Other than those parameters, any place else will be fine.

Venice is very safe. The most expensive hotels are in San Marco district but you can find others in Cannereggio, Castello, San Marco, San Polo and Dorsoduro. Venice is carved into those 6 districts and anyone of them is a good choice.

Also try: Venere.com, Trip Advisor, Veniceby, the Frommers site, this site and Venicehotel.com.

Once you get a few, you can post those names on this website for opinions.

Also look at B&Bs - Venere posts them separately. They might be less expensive and are charming.

Here are some that gets good reviews and is in your price range. Venice is very expensive so your price range is on the lower to moderate end believe it or not. But you will be able to find a nice place.

Lacalcina.com is the most favorite one on this site but is slightly more expensive for a double without a view.

As prior posters have said, staying on the island of Venice proper in any of the six siesteres (sp?) and you'll be fine. Many folks like to be in the midst of things & opt for San Marco Sq. And then others avoid it because it can get so crowded with all the daytrippers making the pilgramage to the piazza. Since Venice isn't that big, staying in one of the other neighborhoods, such as Dorsoduro .... well, you're still within easy walking distance from the major sites.

We stayed at a lovely hotel across from the train station, Hotel Antiche Figure. It was perfect for us because we'd come to Venice by train so it was a mere walk across the bridge. I'm sorry I can't help you with rates but it's a 3-star so it might be in your range. We were a short vaporetto ride from everywhere and, like you, we don't mind a walk and strolled to the Rialto Bridge on more than one occasion.

All the hotels but one that we stayed in in Italy were 3-star and I wish the 3-star hotels in North America were as nice!

i used to be a BIG proponent of staying in lido mostly for economic reasons...

but i've come to the conclusion that the inconvenience and time wasted getting back and forth is not worth the money saved on a less expensive hotel.

i still like lido and, if you're driving, it is the only alternative to the garage outside the islands. but even neighborhood charm (?) doesn't make up for actually being on the main island.

Thanks so much for all the advice. I had done some searching, but couldn't seem to find ones reccommended on this board in my lower price range. I did find ones on Venere, but mostly wasn't sure of the areas. Sorry if I accidentally posted twice. I thought I posted, then couldn't find it, so I posted again. Turns out I did one on the Europe forum, and one on the Italy forum. Oh well, us newbies will learn. By the way, is there a way to unpost if I should happen to slip up again? EvenMary, I will be staying at The Galleria Hotel in Dorsoduro district as of September 15 - when I return I will post again and let you know of my experiences - reasonable rate for Venice of 120 euro per night, breakfast served in your room - only has 9 rooms. But the hotel is not air-conditioned.

In May, three of us shared a triple room at Ca'Turelli B&B for 120 Euros. It is in Dorsoduro, and we found it through the veniceby.com website, under B&Bs. It was comfortable and quiet, with a large bathroom and a decent enough breakfast. Good location.

Another place I can't say enough good things about is Casa Martini in the Cannaregio area (casamartini.it) but I think the price may be higher than your range (stayed there 3 years ago for about 120 euros but I think the price went up).

I have always felt very safe walking around Venice late at night -- it is one of my favorite things to do there, so mysterious and unique.

EvenMary, there is no way to remove a post once you have posted it. And there is no Italy forum. The Italy choice is just a part of the search function to mark posts in the Europe forum that pertain particularly to Italy and to retrieve them. I would recommend checking out the Hotel Riva. It fits your budget and my husband and I enjoyed it very much this spring. It IS a one-star however, so nothing fancy, but the location is hard to beat - near Piazza San Marco (maybe a 5 minute walk) and the Rialto (maybe 10 minutes), on the "corner" of two canals.

The Web site is www.hotelriva.it. On the opening page, it's the red building in the middle. Our room had the third-floor windows you see on the corner. To see the interior of that room to judge if it's OK for you, click on "rooms," then on the fifth photo from the left. That's it.

I'd recommend paying the extra 10 euro per night for the canal view - it's well worth it.
