In Europe, along the Dales Way in Dentdale, Cumbria, England. In June with the Hawthorne in bloom and the fields awash in yellow flowers. And the sheep (of course).

Closer to home, in the woods of the north Georgia mountains. By the side of a waterfall near my cabin. My dog and I seem to be the only ones who know about it.

Trying to be funny because I don't feel like combing my brain to find that "one" place, but you know one really does not have to be far to feel the magic of a place, of life, and beauty of those around you. I suggest reading Richard Bach AND The Historian.

I keep struggling with the Historian - am about half way through and it still hasn't grabbed me. Was surprised it was such a big seller in UK

Wombat7, Good thing nothing has grabbed you half- or full-way through The Historian. It is a book about Dracula, Man ;)

Seriously, I personally found it to be a fantastic book with clear, crisp descriptions of many cities and places. And a serious plot.

There's a certain bench on a hill overlooking Lake Ullswater in England's Lake District where I take in the pastoral view and feel utterly relaxed and at peace. I could sit there for hours. My husband photographed the scene, enlarged the picture and had it framed for me for Christmas. The other place is a farmhouse B&B in Killarney Ireland overlooking the National Park and lake. There I fell in love with Ireland.

Edinburgh, Scotland. Dragging my suitcase up the many steps out of Waverley station and suddenly hearing the most wonderful bagpipe music. No doubt then that we really had arrived in Scotland.

Haweswater, Cumbria. During a winter visit there was some snow on the fells and we wanted to show it to our daughter. On the entire drive along Haweswater we didn’t encounter another soul, the silence and the remoteness all against this beautiful snowy winter backdrop; it was a truly memorable morning.

Balquhidder Glen, Scotland. Going to the little church to look at the grave of Rob Roy and discovering that the graveyard was full of Mclaren graves, the graves of my husband’s ancestors. Taking a little path to a nearby waterfall and seeing a sign pointing towards Boars Rock (Creag an Tuirc), the rallying place of the Mclarens. Climbing the hill to the Rock and the wonderful view from the top. One of the highlights of our trip!

Neuschwanstein, Bavaria. This was our first castle on our very first trip to Europe. It was March, cold and we were all wrapped up in scarves and gloves. We took the horse drawn cart to the top, what a fantastic experience.

Love this thread! My list of "Places to visit before I die" has grown exponentially.

My three spots to date:
1) A public garden in Santander, Spain on a balmy fall night. The sky was dark lavender - a color I haven't seen since (15+ yrs ago) and will never forget.
2) Machu Picchu in the spring at dusk, with no one but llamas and my husband to share the view.
3) Watching the sun set in Oia, Greece.
4) (I know it's more than 3 - indulge me!) Turning the corner and seeing the Statue of David for the first time.

Now I've got the travel-itch so badly I'm not going to be able to concentrate today :-).
