Where is this?

While surfing some travel sites, my wife came across this picture, but other than Istanbul, there were no specifics about what and specifically what and where this site is.
Any additional info would be appreciated.

Well, that is pretty amazing looking! Sorry, I don't know where this is but you have my curiosity piqued. I hope someone will be able to answer.

Looks like the Blue Mosque to me, but I'm no expert.

Thanks for your reply, StCirq.
If this is indeed the Blue Mosque (which we've been to), we've never seen this view of it (although with all the possible views, you could be right).
Can anyone else confirm this, or come up with a different answer? I'd consider a return trip to Istanbul (or wherever) just to see this.

I think it's a fantasy image. The architecture looks wrong - too many weirdly positioned minarets.

I don't know where it is, either, but I'm curious if this is really in Istanbul. All of the pictures of mosques in Istanbul show much flatter domes. The closest I've come to a similar look is the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi, but it looks too new to be the photo that was posted.

Croesus, that makes sense. I'm no expert, either, but there does seem to be too many minarets!

AFAIK only 2 mosques in the whole world have more than 6 minarets
al-Masdschid an-Nabawi,
and
Al-Masdschid al-Harām,
both in Saudi Arabia.
Neither the one nor the other looks like that showed above.
No mosque has more than 10 minarets anyway.

This looks real but unreal at the same time.

janisj Jun 2nd, 2018 12:12 PM

to me it looks like someone playing with photo editing software . . .

StCirq Jun 2nd, 2018 12:13 PM

I agree it looks unreal, but does the spire on the central dome of the Blue Mosque count as a minaret? If so, it has seven.

If you search for the image itself it comes up on a pinterest page titled "Discover ideas about Fantasy Town".
The image supposedly comes from CGSociety, a digital art website.

But I agree, looks like a swell place to visit!

I think it is a photosop fantasy based on the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan mosque in Abu Dhabi

Found it! It's called "Fantasy Mosque" by a concept designer, Gurmukh Bhasin, on cgsociety.org, a site for digital artists:

Fantasy Mosque by gurmukh bhasin | Fantasy | 3D | CGSociety

Call me obsessive (my husband does), but it was quite a search! Using Google image search, I found one blog that it was posted to, then an earlier blog where it was reposted, and then an earlier one still, until I found one with the artist's name and the site it was posted.

Well, that's settled. Thanks for all the research. I was ready to plan what I thought was going to be a fantastic trip, but I didn't expect it to be literally that.

to Stcirq:
the Sultan Ahmet mosque at Istanbul has 6 (six) minarets.

I believe (and may well be wrong), that at its construction, such was the anger by the authoritities, that the Sultan had to pay for two more minarets to be added to the Mosque at Mecca, so that the new mosque in Istanbul did not exclipse it.
I found the queues and crowds at the Sultanahmet (The Blue Mosque) - really spoilt the experience for me, and I far preferred the Süleymaniye Mosque.

neckervd Jun 3rd, 2018 01:09 AM

Willit, you are right!
(and I wouldn't queue for the visit of Sultanahmet neither)
