We were there several years ago now, but we had high tea at the Hotel Sacher, for the Sacher Torte of course, and how disappointing was that? Dry and horrible, so unless it has changed greatly don't bother going there. Sorry to be negative but I can't offer any good places. You will no doubt get some good suggestions soon on this thread.

Hi,
I was in Vienna, which is a beautiful city! You should definitley check out the famous Demel for high tea. It's a well-known chocolate/pastry shop from the 19th century where all the royalty and wealty had tea. They serve beautiful desserts (plus you can get a peek through a large glass window at the chocolate making process)in pretty rooms upstairs. Plus it's a nice place to buy gifts because they sell chocolates etc. downstairs. I'm not sure of the exact address, but it's in the main area and it famous so you should have no trouble finding it-enjoy!

If you mean an English-style high tea, a late-afternoon meal with at least one hot dish, I doubt that you'll find it in Vienna. For afternoon tea, however, I agree that Demel's would be lovely--as long as you don't go in the summer, when it can be very hot inside.

I'll also vote for Demel, although it is a bit over-touristed because of its reputation. If you stroll around the city, you will find numerous small coffee shops that will serve good tea and pastries.

Yes, Demel's. We had the Sacher Torte there, and agree with several on the board that it is better than the one at Sacher hotel. Although,Sacher had lots of other wonderful wonderful pastries and a great ambiance.

They had a big dispute around the turn of the century who the recipe for Sacher Torte belongs to--the hotel, or the chef who moved to Demel's. Lawsuits and all. Those Viennese take their pastries seriously!
