Where is the best place for a special occasion Sunday lunch in London?
All recommendations gratefully considered. We are leaning towards a high end restaurant, but mostly want a good atmosphere(not necessarily formal) and good food. We do not want a lonely dining room. Thank you!

My choice would be Maggie Jones off Kensington High Street. It is a rustic atmospheric "country house" on three floors with tons of dried flowers, farm antiques, dripping candles, and old pine booths and tables. The food is on a blackboard, many roasts, and home cooking style food with great traditional English desserts. It is very reasonable and not what one would call high end, but a real fun atmosphere, with waiters who are likely to keep you entertain as they yell back and forth to each other, half sing and dance as they bring you your food, etc. How many are you? Upstairs is a large table that seats 10 or 12 that always seems to have some big celebration group when we are there. The place has always been packed when we are there for Sunday lunch, so I would strongly recommend reservations.
My the way the name "Maggie Jones" refers to Princess Margaret who used to live in the "neighborhood".

Patrick thank you for a great suggestion. I will be with my father, husband, and two teenage boys. It sounds lively and just right for a family affair. I also appreciate your detailed description. We will give it a try. WRS thank you also . I probably would have opted for OXO if not for Patrick's idea...

A small word of warning. I have the habit of taking my glasses off and putting them on the table which I did the first time we went to Maggie Jones. When I got up to leave, I discovered that they were completely covered with candle wax which had been running down the candle and all over them for about the last hour. I had to sort of chip them off the table and thought I'd never get all the wax off.
