Where is Taunton exactly??
I have to go to Taunton in England next month and I was trying to figure out the best way to get there. I'll be flying into Heathrow and was wondering if I would be able to catch a train from there and if anyone was familiar with how far it might be from the Heathrow area. I don't want to rent a car so driving is out of the question. Thanks very much!

Lucky you! Oh to be in Taunton when the weather here in Ottawa, Canada where I am writing from forecasts a high of -10 C today, and that is a veritable heatwave after a handful of days last week that were in the minus 30 C range, and more of the same is promised beginning mid-week.
Taunton is a market town in southwest Somerset in what is called the West Country of England, and is about an hour drive southwest of Bristol. You can catch a connecting flight to Bristol on British Airways which will leave you an hour or less from Taunton. Depending on traffic it is a 3 to 4 hour drive from Heathrow on excellent highways west towards Wales, then south from Bristol. It is an old Saxon town and is situated on a river, the name of which I forget.
I think you may want to explore bus rather than train traffic down to Taunton, which is easily accessible both for cost and speed. On my last trip to England I stayed a little bit south of there and while I drove, a friend coming to join me from Finland elected to take the bus, determining it was both more reasonably priced and also more direct. He picked up the bus at Heathrow to Bristol then connected on another south.

Lanny seems to be recommending, plane, car rental and bus, in that order. I would suggest the train, which involves taking the Reading/Heathrow RailAir Link bus to Reading train station and First Great Western train from there to Taunton. The bus is about 45 min and the train 90 min to 2 hrs. You can get info on the RailAir Link and the train at www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk

There is a good train service from London to Taunton via Reading. It may be quicker but more expensive to get the Heathrow Express to London Paddington, but the easiest way is to book a ticket to Taunton via the non-stop bus from Heathrow to Reading. Try www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk for details.
