Where in the world is Bibbiano Guiglieschi a castle near Buonconvento
 

Good Day Fodorites,

As part of a return trip to Tuscany I am planning a couple of day trips from Montisi to towns of the Crete Senesi, like Buonconvento, San Giovanni d'Asso and Murlo. I have done lots of web searches and found plenty of intriguing places to visit; however, one place caught my eye and search as I might the most "where is this place" information I can find on Bibbiano Guiglieschi, is the town of Bibbiano is 4K from Buonconvento. The castle may just be off SP34. I know this is probably minutia, and once I visit the TI in Buonconvento I’ll know how to get, there. In the meantime, I am planning. Any help would be much appreciated.

There is a very good monestery up in the hills to the East. Before you get to the monestry by at least 1 km there is a little restaurant on the left, very classy for such a small place.

Wonderful place the Crete Senese. Fantastic views. We stayed at the Castello di Leonina in Castello not far from Sienna and loved it. Enjoyed Asciano not far from there on the beautiful drive I associate with Crete Senese. Enjoy your time there.

The name suggests Castelnuovo Tancredi/Guiglieschi would be the new castle the family built possibly to replace the original one.

As I said, I think it will become obvious when the OP gets there.

it is possible to "over-plan".

I will do a little research, we have stayed in this area 5 plus times.

I haven't heard of this place but there is a huge castled estate at the cross roads just leaving Bibbiano on ne way to Murlo.

This is a wonders area pretty much untouched by tourism as there is pn't much there oher than huge estates and small agroturismo farms. The lands landscapes are classical Tuscan and there are heaps of walking/cycle trails : you just need a very small scale map which can be purchased in Buonconvento.

If you are in the are try the Osteria in La Befa.

Frightening place as they don't speak a word of anything, even their Italian is so countrified it is incomprehensible. Their cooking style is ...pick up a gun, shoot something out the back, cook it, serve it.
Incredible quality.

I remember visiting Tancredi, they have vineyards and rooms.

The other castle, well goodness knows. I certainly don't recall signs from Buonconvento

There are signs in Bibbiano for Castiglion de Bosco but that is the 5 star resort and Brunello vineyard on the way to Montalcino.

The link I gave was from the official tourism website for Tuscany. Here's what they say.

Castelnuovo Tancredi, listed as Castelnuovo Guiglieschi, belonged to several different families of the Sienese aristocracy, including the Tancredi family, and has always been part of an extensive landed property. The castle is composed of a 16th century villa and a large tower with battlements, a sloping base and arches on stone corbels. The façades, although plastered, still show signs of the original arched windows. The castle is surrounded by a beautiful park full of oaks and ilexes while the drive-way is lined with cypresses.

The clue mayu be in the word nuovo, which means new. the descriptions I've seen of the castle in Bibbiano is that it's rather older than the 16th century.

Actually, that says it's curently (or was last year) priovate property, and it's intended to convert it.

They are both listed in the wiki on Buonconvento, although Castelnuovo doesn't merit its own entry.

It appears on googlemaps as a building on the left just north of Bibbiano on the way to Murlo.

It is covering in scaffolding but yo can clearly see the tower, never noticed it before.

Perhaps, but I read it as referring to the villa, not the castle.

I don't see a road listed as SS2 around Buonconvento or Bibbiano (seems to be south of S. Quirico).

OK, i have been here. the Castello di Bibbiano that you are asking about is not the winery castle. it is in the actual town of Bibbiano. so i will try to explain location. as you enter town Bounconvento on SP34 (coming from North to South) you pass a large parking lot on right of SP34, not sure why it someone say SS2 , that ends a little further north in Moneteroni, you take a RIGHT going west on SP34, before train station, stay on SP34 a littleover 3K, when you come to the intersection it the hamlet of Bibbiano, SP34 goes right and SP103 left.
you will see this castle STRAIGHT AHEAD a few hundred meters. there is a dirt road with cyprus trees , you will notice the distictive tower with bell.
There was some construction being performed.

I have tried this before and cannot remember how to do it.

Does anybody remember how to post a link from here directly to an image on googlemaps?. It is helpful in situation like this.

go to google , click on maps on upper bar , cut and past the link in the box and hit search, but you need a google acct. to create a map and save it. i think this is what you are trying to do.
