Where in Rome Can 600,000 Romans Celebrate the Cup?

When i heard on BBC last night that 600,000 Romans had gathered to celebrate the World Cup victory and greet the team and cup at first i was perplexed as i knew few places in Rome that large to accommodate such a gathering. But i'd forgot about the centuries old Circus Maximus, lying below the old Roman Forum above it on one of Rome's 7 hills. Yes here was a huge gathering ground, one used by ancient Romans for sporting contests (and other contests that were not so sporting) - and apparently the party is still going on here!
I would have loved to be there! (I'd much rather have been in Paris celebrating the cup win, alas!)

I was also perplexed as to where all those people were going to gather but i really shouldn't have thought too hard as the Cicus Maximus was just made for such a gathering... as it was all those years ago !!like you i wish that i was there certainly NOT in Paris i did worry at one point if England had won where we were all going to gather when we had the trophy...But then i woke up and realised it was only a dream Ha Ha !!

Materazzi has admitted making insulting comments to Zidane, although he denies that these comments were racist or derogatory about Zidane's family.

Earlier in the week I read that Materazzi had allegedly made the comment that Zidane's mother was a terrorist w****. I can't remember reading anything about his sister, but Zidane accused Materazzi of 'vile insults' towards his mother and sister.

A hearing is taking place tomorrow in Zurich as Materazzi is off on holiday to the Maldives with his family.

And in another twist, Zidane apparently abused referee Jorge Larroinda, albeit under his breath, in the France-Portugal semi-final. He was seen to mutter in Spanish "hijo de puta", thereby insulting Larrionda's mother.

Yet Zidane's public apology on French TV seems to be enough to have convinced his fellow countrymen to forgive him his temper.

I have a pretty good idea what it's like, if not where. I was in the midst of 1.75 million at Wacker and Lasalle when the Chicago White Sox came home in tickertape. I'll never forget it.

You had, at least, done it before in your lifetime. We waited nearly 90 years since the last occasion.

Awfully childish reaction to something that was obviously intended to goad him into doing something foolish.

A pro like Zidane should have known better. He should have saved his head butt till after the game.

he's had like 14 red cards in his career or something - obviously was made the fool by being goaded into reacting at such a crucial time. I'd forgive anyone once but 14 times - needs some AM (anger management).

We were in Genoa at midnight after watching the match in Santa Margherita Legure on the Italian Riviera. In the streets were thousands of Italians forming impromptu parades in the streets, singing Italian songs and waving their flag. It was glorious to be a part of it all. Our teenage daughters were thrilled to experience such an event. We will always remember the joy of the Italians and how they celebrated in such a civilized and wonderful manner.
