Where in Paris to buy costumes?
 

My daughter is very interested in the clothing from the Renaissance period. She has been getting involved in the festivals here in the states.We will be in Paris in June & wonder if any of the markets have bits & pieces that could be used for costumes? Prices for ready made costumes can be quite pricey here so any cheap tips would be great.

There are a number of booths at the big Paris flea market (when will I ever learn to remember its name?). I saw costumes for sale from opera and theatre productions as well as some authentic extremely old clothing (but really be expected to pay for those items).

Just remember how the flea market got its name!

My next book happens to be on this subject, thrift shop costuming! <BR><BR>I saw a lot of "bits and pieces" at flea markets in Paris and in London that might be used to fashion Renfair-style costume pieces, but usually it requires some skill at sewing, redesigning, and fitting to turn them into useable pieces. <BR><BR>You might luck out and find a beaded bag, jeweled pendant, peasant-style blouse, brocade vest, or dress of fabric suitable for such costumes. Unusual antique buttons, tassels, and trim can be found at flea markets too.<BR><BR>The brocante market at Vanves I went to is generally less pricey, I understand, than the huge "antique market" at Clignancort (spelling?) <BR><BR>A caution: fabric more than 30 years old is often too fragile to hold up under normal wear. In some cases, vintage garments can be re-lined or reinforced to add to their useful life. Such things as jewelry and buttons are more likely to be sturdy.<BR><BR>

Merci to all! I know my daughter will be glad to rummage. We don't need it to be old just to fit the period look. All these are great suggestions & I will see what we can find.Patrick,If you remember where that market is then let me know about where it's near. We are trying to cram the most into the 4 days that we have. Luckily we will be in London & Paris over weekends so most markets will be open.<BR>Keep your fingers crossed!

Yes, Clingnancourt. Look for the rather modern building with the open air and fountain in the front -- there are a number of stalls/stores there with theatrical items and costumes.
