Where in London to have a cup of Christmas cheer?

I am asking this question for an Aussie friend who now lives in Marina Del Ray, CA.
He is going to be in London later this month, (spending a few days before flying to Dublin for Christmas.) He is planning to meet up with an old friend (from OZ) who will also be passing through London.
They would like to find a nice place, perhaps near Covent Garden where they can catch up on each other’s news.
Can any Londoners recommend a great pub or a trendy café that has a good wine list?
It depends what kind of atmosphere they're looking for and how upscale/downscale they want to go.

I'm assuming nothing too rowdy or noisy. There are many different pubs, restaurants and bars in that area. I always liked La Tasca, which is a Spanish tapas bar. I'm not sure what they're wine list is like but it's fun, with good food, yet still easy to carry on an unhurried conversation over drinks and tapas. I think there's another pub/bar right next door which seemed nice as well, but I can't remember what it was called!

Try www.coventgardenlife.com for other ideas.

The Crusted Pipe in Covent Garden is exactly what you're looking for.
