Where in France is hot in July/August has a beautiful lake for swimming, has lots to see and do (fetes, festivals, markets etc.)

I am looking for a place in France with all of the above. I have visited the following regions in the past Vaucluse, Poitou Charente, Brittanny, Normandy, Vosges, Dordogne, Ile de Paris. Finding the info. on seperate areas is so long winded. Does anyone know of a destination in France that fits my criteria? I love Provence but didn't manage to find a lovely lake there. Can anyone advise?

Thanks Buzzy

The Auvergne - unfortunately I was there too long ago to remember the names of the lake & fortified mountain villages we visited, but it was lovely. Try to be there for Bastille Day !

ron, I think swimming is discouraged at Jugon les Lacs as now somewhat contaminated by run off from the pig farms...a big political hot potato around there. Still lovely to gaze upon!

Buzzy, the Aveyron might merit looking into.

Lac St.-Croix would be excellent--there are a number of resort areas in the vicinity, and the location is beautiful

Lac St.-Croix would be excellent--there are a number of resort areas in the vicinity, and the region is beautiful, with much to see But festivals? I don't know of any associated with lakes--I'm assuming you're interested in swimming and water sports.

You will be in lavender country around St Croix so there will will be festivals.
When the time comes for your trip, check in at www.provenceweb.com for fetes, etc.

Does it have to be France? Montreux has all of that -- and they speak French!

I was just thinking the same as the post above, it's not exactly what you asked for but Switzerland has been very hot the past few summers. Lausanne, Vevey, Montreux (outside Geneva) are right on Lac Leman and they do the open air markets, music, and festivals galore!

Thanks very much for all your replies. I will do loads of research on all your suggestions now. I suppose I'm a bit of a France addict really. I spend the period between visits longing to go back. I will look at the suggestion of Montreux though, you have given me food for thought.

Bonjour Buzzy,

Consider the south coast of Lake Leman (Yvoire,Thonon, Evian). French prices, French food (more choice on lake fish than in Switzerland, at a cheaper price), beaches, festivals, close to the French and Swiss Alps, a boat ride away from Geneva, Montreux, Lausanne, Vevey and Chillon castle ...

Hi

Think about the Languedoc coast.
Much of it has lagoons separated from the Med by a sand spit.

You can swim oceanside or lagoonside from places such as Sete.
