Dfourth, can you be more specific, please, regarding towns you've stayed in? I have a big birthday coming up in mid-March and have been considering Portugal. I've never been there, southern Spain yes, but never Portugal. I'd appreciate any place you can suggest.

I've been everywhere up and down the coast, but we always stay at the Aparthotel Jardim in Albufeira for like $30 a night with kitchen and ocean view balcony; close to shopping; 10 minute walk down (and I do mean down) to the beach; handy for daytrips all across the Algarve. Besides Albufeira, Lagos is a nice place to stay (and has a bit of life that time of year); further west down the coast there are smaller towns, all very pretty; closer to Faro there are large golf resorts; east of Faro is less set up for tourism. The towns and landscapes vary quite a lot along the coast, and some will depend on your preferred style (golf resort vs. empty tourist town vs. small & rustic).

Thanks dfourth. Lagos' "bit of life" sounds better than either golf resort or empty tourist town. Is Faro itself an interesting place?
